Massey Ferguson 1643 & Allis-Chalmers D14
I need some advice. I have been struggling with trying to decide between the John Deere 4120 and the Massey Ferguson 1643. I have looked at the spec sheets until I'm blind. I've test drove them both and priced them both out. I like the fact that the MF uses a naturally aspirated engine vs the Deere's turbo. Is this a legitimate concern? How about metal vs plastic fenders? Any and all opinions are welcome!!! Thanks.

I can't really speak to the MF1643, 'cause I've never sat on the seat on one of 'em. No doubt it's a solid tractor, though. MF has been building great tractors for many years.

The 4120 engine is the least Hp in the 4000 series range (43-66hp). So, working to crank out 43hp should be an easy chore for that variant of the 4024T motor.

As well, Deere has used that engine for many of their Skid-steers for a number of years. It's a very dependable powerplant.

I was a "plastic fender" skeptic, too! Especially in a cold climate like Alaska. I didn't want to be one of those guys in the local newspaper holding a chunk of my tractor 'cause it fractured during the middle of one of our 2 week runs of minus 35F!!!

Hasn't been the case at all, though. Tough as %ell and maintains a nice look even after lots of abuse crashing thru the woods! I'm sold on the plastic and would look for it again on my next tractor.

Best of luck.

I know nothing about either of these models, but I am one of those people with concerns about plastic. Some years ago Kubota began putting plastic on their tractors and so many people protested they went back to metal on many components. I have to say that after owning my John Deere 2305 for several years as well as my BX2660 and others, durability of plastic has not been an issue, so while I prefer metal, it wouldn't influence my decision on which to buy.

I don't know anything about the MF1643.
I have a JD 4120 with PowerReverser & 400CX FEL, it has been a solid machine, no problems thus far.
