I have a jd420 gas engine that just started this problem.
When I hit the pto seitch for it to start the mower deck it comes right on the runs for about 10 seconds then dies , Then I let the mower deck come to a halt then reset the key and it will start up then run for 10 seconds then die. If I dont engage the mower deck it will continue to run so I am thinking it is a safety switch or something like that. It is a electric pto by the way.

There is a safey switch under the bottom of the seat. If you were sitting on the seat when you pulled the PTO switch out then it sounds like it needs replaced. Check to see if the connections fell apart.

I will check it out , it seems weird though that it would operate for 10 seconds then die. I am thinking that the only thing I did different is I changed the hydralic fluid and filter this winter and the front belts were changed for the pto. I am wondering if maybe there is a kickout of somesort if maybe the pto is drawing to much amps or something like that, and I do know that it has a low oil switch that will kill the engine if I drive on too much of a hill I guess when the oil shifts to one side or the other.

I would check the air gap on your electric clutch. It should be 10 to 12 thousandths. You adjust it by sliding the feeler gauge through the three slots in the edge of the tin housing that surrounds the clutch and tightening the adjusting nuts. Also make sure your battery is in good shape and your charging system is working properly. If the problem still persists take off the clutch and inspect the winding for cracks and bare wires.
