I have a JD 5300 with 540 loader and have a problem with the float position on the bucket. When I push control lever into the float position and let go of lever it seems like the hydraulics is overloading. I have to keep hands on the lever and pushed forward in order for the float to work properly.

Sometimes when I drop the bucket to the ground and get off tractor to work the bucket will slowly curl down under pressure and empty the bucket or attempt to lift the front end. unless I quickly hit lever to right raise position.

Can anyone describe my problem and how I might go about making repairs. I've done my own hydraulic work and repairs on my equipment so I'm not exactly a novice but not an experienced mechanic. John Deere dealer is over 60 miles away so I usually have to do it on my own. This is a John Deere that does not require a lot of repairs in the 20 years I've owned it.

Any ideas on what I am looking at.

I would start by looking at all the linkage and or cables between the joystick and directional valve. What you are describing sounds like the raise lower spool is not fully engaging the float detent while the curl dump is not spring centering properly.

Make sure all of the components move freely

Depending on how the valve is made it is also possible the covers over the centering spring assembly is full of crud from 20 years of use.

Thanks oldnslo I was hoping that it was going to be more simple then going into the valves. Although it is not so simple to get at the linkage.

I would second the suggestion that the bottom cup is full of crud as a possibility seeing as how it just happened to me. The moisture collecting in the bottom cup for years had created so much rust that it prevented the end of the spool from extending all the way into the cup and the return spring wasn't strong enough to pull the spool out of the crud. It's pretty easy on most valves to take the bottom cup off if you can get at it. Just flush it out with WD40 and put it back. I drilled a small weep hole in the bottom of mine when I put it back together to let the moisture drain.

Thanks BeezFun I was hoping that someone who had the same experience could point me into a direction to look.
