My JD790 with R4's came from dealer with tread width set at the narrowest width on the front tires. I was wondering if anyone out there has swapped right and left tire/wheel assm. to increase width? Is there any known or lerned problems with this? It appears this increases the width by 5 or 6 inches.
By the way, I have been reading post here for at least 18 months but, have just registered recently. I really like all the great info you guys provide, it was very helpful last April when I upgraded my Ford 1500 2wd to a new JD790 4wd w/ fel. I can't understand why I didn't think I needed a FEL ! , also does anyone know where I can purchase "bolt-on" grab-type chain hooks ( to install on bucket of fel).

Thanks Guys,
JDIceman

My 790 has R1s and it came to me with all four tires in the widest position (has FEL). Not sure how much difference it will make, but it would be relatively easy to do since the fronts are so small.

If you come across bolt on grab hooks, let me know. I've got a single bolt on tow hook in the center of my bucket. I'd like to add grab hooks to each end someday /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I swapped front tires last night and today I cut a 75' drive into a neighbor's new garage. I was amazed at how much more stability I had with a full bucket. Sure am glad I tried it. I also tried my new rear ballast I built. It is made from 18" round HVAC duct with draw bar thru the center and a top link bracket mounted to the top of the duct. All connected together by 3/8" & 5/8" all-thread, filled with 10 sacks of concrete. Weighs about 650#. I will have to post some pictures. RobS, thanks for the reply.

Glad it worked out for you Chuck. I would like to see your ballast if you get a chance.

Have you had any trouble with your FEL lock rods vibrating against the loader frame? It drives me nuts. I've tried to bend them out of the way but there isn't much room to work, may have to pop the loader off to take care of it.

Great little tractor, isn't it /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Iceman,
Do you have R4's or R1's on your tractor? I have R4's and would love to make the front end a little wider, but I don't think you can do it with R4's. I have a FEL on my 790, also

I have R4's on mine and have put about 10hrs. on it since swapping the front tires( this puts valve stems to axle side ). I have not noticed any problems or concerns and I have been watching quite closely, as I stated earlier, this has made a very noticable increase in stability. I am very pleased and would recommend this change. I would also recommend that after you have completed the job, as you move the tractor for the first time move very slowly while watching that none of the wheel is going to hit any of the axle assembly.

Good luck,
Chuck
