I have a 2001 JD790. The manual says to change the oil every 500 hours. Since I use just a little, I will not accumulate 500 hours for quite some time. I do run it at least once a month up to operating temp. Would changing the engine oil every other year be a wise investment in preventive maintenance? I fear that even running the engne up to temp, may not get rid of any fuel blow by cause by the cold start ups.

Any suggestions? http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/images/smilies/confused.gif

Like you, our mf135 gets little use. Yearly oil changes are a good idea, in the spring after sitting most of the winter. That is when most of the condensation would collect. However, it has also been known to happen less frequently... now that I'm not around dad's as much (dealing with my own farm and family) the ol man is less likely to go out and change it himself than he was to tell me to go do it!

My 3005 calls for 200 hr oil changes. Time will tell if it gets that much in a year, if not it will get changed come spring.

Considering that it doesn't take much oil to do a change vs the cost of rebuilding an engine, I change mine at least once a year, usually twice even though
I don't put that many hours on it. My 750 never has to have any oil added between changes and the engine is clean inside. A little preventive maintenance goes a long way. I change my hydraulic fluid every year too.

On my 4010, I changed it once/yr. Only put 60 to 100 hrs/yr on it. Think it recommended 200 hours. 500 hours is an awful long time. If you figured an average of 50 mph for a car/pickup x 500 = 25,000 miles. That's too long.

Are you sure the book says 500 hours for the oil change? My 790 book says change oil every 200 hours but I change it every year.

Annual is a good idea as some acids accumulate as well as condensation especially in a little used engine.
Oil is cheap compared to an engine rebuild.
I call it insurance.
Also based on low hours don't bother with fancy synthetic oil as IMHO that is a waste of $$'s as Synthetic's main advantage is longer life which in this case is not applicable.
Just use a properly rated diesel oil.

I also change my engine oil annually or at 100 hours, which comes first (so far, it's always been annually).
Oil and filters are relatively inexpensive...

I change my oil every year which usually turns out to be about 100 hours. Book calls for no less than annually. No need to use synthetic on low hours as long as you change the oil annually.

Same here as most of the rest, yearly, which for me is around 100 hours on my '04 790. ~~ grnspot
