I have an early model JD850 with a leaking & malfunctioning loader control valve. I'm inclined to replace it as I know this tractor has had some water intrusion issues in the past. I'm also not a huge fan of the location as I frequently hit it with my leg when turned around monitoring the 3pt attachments. My problem is that I have absolutely no idea what I need or where to start. I'm thinking I just need a 2 spool hydraulic control valve. I'm assuming I'll have to have soft lines fabricated, and I'm not sure about how to mount it. Would I mount it in the same place? On the fender? Are the joysticks typically adjustable to fit whatever mounting solution I come up with?

Here's what I'm working with:

I have a 950 with I think the same valve. I am rebuilding the engine on this 950 so I worked on some other little projects while waiting on the machine shop. That included replacing the bushings in the lever arms to tighten them back up. It looks like my valve is seeping but I plan on rebuilding it at a later date. It should just be some o rings. Seems like rebuilding your valve would be much easier than replacing and replumbing. Have you looked at the parts manual for your valve?

I had the same problem with my 950 a few years back before I sold it. I did a good pressure wash to get things clean. Turns out JD used O rings for seals on some of those fittings, after replacing the rings with new ones, cleaning the fittings well before re-assembly, leaks went away. Not a very convenient spot to use wrenches in, but I managed it. Lots of the fittings JD used during that time frame used O ring seals. My 970, that I still have, does as well. Be careful and don't over tighten when putting it back together, it will damage the O ring. Think JD choosing to use these fittings was a bad choice on their part, doesn't stand up to heat and flexing as well as a solid joint. My loader gets the O rings changed every few years just from normal use. Could be something else, worn shaft and seals ?? I'd try replacing the rings first.

Just for the record, I'm planning on rebuilding the SCV on my John Deere 1050 which is probably the same as you've got on the 950 and 850. I was able to purchase most of the o-rings and such on the Internet. I'll try to post some pictures and details when I do.
