JD855 still won't start

My tractor has not started for about 15 months and has had issues for about 5 years. So I gave it another go today. As per my previous post, it cranks however it just won't start. Here's what I have done so far:

1. removed and cleaned fuel tank and reinstalled with fresh diesel
2. replaced filter
3. bled the entire system from the filter to the injectors (suspect it is getting diesel as it blows a lot of smoke)
4. sprayed a very small amount of starting fluid into the air filter
5. I have tried 3 different batteries
6. solenoid seems to be fine, I can hear it click

It just keeps cranking like to wants to start but just won't. I have attached a picture for reference, does everything look OK?

More than likely the control rack in the pump is stuck.
& just because u HEAR the sol. click doesn't mean its not letting go while your cranking.. Keep an eye on it & MAKE SURE its holding..
OR disconnect it..
IF the sol. is good or out of the way.. its time to go into the side cover on the inj. pump. PROVIDED u have fuel UP TO the inlet on the inj. pump.
AND u bled the air out of the lines going TO the injectors..
1st> loosen ALL the lines AT THE INJECTORS.. & spin the engine.. does fuel squirt out?? IF YES, tighten them back up..
IF your going into the side of the pump.. YOU NEED a hand impact driver w/ a #1 bit & a hammer.. Those little screws are VERY TIGHT..& you'll strip every one of them if u use anything else.!!!
Once the cover is off>> put the throttle WIDE OPEN/FULL.. then.. pull the stop lever on the pump a few times.. Does anything move??
When was the last time u added oil to the pump?? IF it doesn't have an oil line on it.. "U" HAVE TO ADD OIL..

Make sure the fuel cut off solenoid is pulling all the way back. They are known to start sticking.

Thanks for the advice. I will look into the solenoid shortly. I have bled the system all the way to the injectors. When I crack the injectors diesel squirts out. If the solenoid is OK should I then follow your advice on the injector pump even though I am getting diesel to the injectors?

I didn't see the part about having fuel AT the injectors.. only the fact it was smoking.
Does that engine have glow plugs?? IF your not sure, take another picture of the top of the engine & we'll tell ya..
Seeing it sat for 15 months, its very possible that the rack is stuck in the "low idle" position.. THAT"LL allow fuel to be injected but not start..
Theres not enough fuel being delivered at low idle to start the motor..
"Basically" there are 3 main positions to that control rack.. Hi idle, Low idle & Starting..
IF it were mine, I'd be in the side cover in a heart beat.. BUT, check the solenoid & see about the glow plugs FIRST..

855 has a intake air heater grid controlled by module that reads ambiant temperature

I would think about a compression check. Lack of compression is a possibility especially if there is good flow at the injectors. Hopefully it is a stuck rack like pumpguy says. I had one with a bad head gasket perform EXACTLY as you describe.

Just looked at your photo and it looks like your solenoid is pulled back. My 855 solenoid linkage looks different than yours but I notice mine doesn't pull back until I engage the starter. It doesn't just pull with the key turned to the run position.

It may be compression test time as Clint suggested.

If your tractor has a loader and controls and you decide it's too involved to repair I will buy it for parts if you are near enough.

crack the fuel lines AFTER the injector pump to see if the solenoid is opening the rack to allow it to pump.
