Jean Shepherd

Any of you guys ever read Jean Shepherd? He wrote a humor column in Car and Driver Magazine in the seventies, and I came across him there. You're probably familiar with "A Christmas Story" from which a movie was made, and it is usually on television seasonally. He's one of my favorite writers. He was on the radio in the New York area for many years. He wrote four books one of which," In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash" is a special favorite of mine. There are several web sites about him with reprints of his columns, sound bites of radio shows, etc. www.flicklives.com/Misc/who_is.htm is one of the sites. He died in 1999, but his columns and books are contemporary and entertaining.

Bob, used to listen to his show on WOR when I was a kid, (was it wed. night at 7:00?) been wondering if there was anything archived from those shows still available. What a great story teller........

One of his books is " In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash" It has these great vignettes of growing up in Hammond IN in the 1950s. They lend themselves to being read outloud which we adults would do for our kids when they were growing up. We would sit around the supper table and the kids would say," tell us about the olden days". The humour, pathos and irony really opened up the conversation and helped the kids realize that their parents were really pretty cool and ,certainly a lot smarter than they realized. The stories have the Mark Twain feel of a universal and timeless truth. It helped us to stay connected to our kids. And yea, I listen to NPR.
