Symptom: Engine runs for 1 to 10 minutes then dies, acts like not getting fuel. :(

Tried so far: Changed fuel filter, cleaned sediment bowl, traced fuel from take to injector pump, have fuel at primer, fuel at filter, fuel at return from filter.

Primed pump, opened lines from injector, No fuel. Turned motor over no fuel from top of injector. Re-prime, now fuel will squirt from injector, when engine turned over. Disconnect lines from injectors, turn motor over until get fuel squirting from lines, connect up all the lines.

Engine starts, runs 1 to 10 minutes.

Rinse, repeat, same results.

When changed fuel filter, looked like I had diesel HUMbug residue. Could there be some of this sludge somewhere else in the system, cannot find any other strainers/filters. :confused2:

2 years ago, removed tank, flushed, coated with diesel fuel tank coatings, replace all lines, seals, gaskets, filter, sediment bowl. Turned out injector had jumped time, but then it would blow white smoke, now runs find, then starves for fuel.

Any ideas.
Thanks Gary
PS. I have a brand new injector pump sitting on the shelf.

Gary,

At every banjo fitting in the fuel system there is a fine screen filter inside. Check those. Also, the hoses themselves are notorious for getting old and losing detritus off the linings that then clog things up. They can also get soft and collapse internally under the suction of the fuel pump, thus shutting off the flow of fresh fuel - that would be my first guess as to your problem.

Have you checked to make sure that the little vent hole in your fuel cap is open? If plugged, the fuel system will eventually get "vacuum blocked" after the lift pump has pulled fuel for a bit. Neverheard of it on a tractor, but it is common on other small engines. Just a thought.

I would check the main filter housing after it runs and quits, we had a Leyland that acted like this but it would empty the filter housing we finally got the fuel system air tight (everything Before the injection pump) and that solved the problem. this is only a possibility- if the filter housing is not full after the engine quits

Well, got it fixed. Really stupid problem. Removed and cleaned every hose, pipe, filter. Back flushed everything. Run for a few minutes then die. So figured last thing to do is something in the tank, need to take it off. First drain what fuel that is in the tank out. After 2 hours I only have about a pint of fuel drained out. Gauge says it is still half full. Check tank, it is empty. The gauge had failed, the only thing since 2005 that has always worked and it fails. Tractor was just out of fuel. Filled it up, (added some biocide just to be sure) cut hay for 4 hours without a problem.
Well Duh.

Embarrassing, but not uncommon. Glad you're back up and running!

Don't feel bad. It happens to the big guys too.

Now thats funny. Laughing with you, not at you.

If it makes you feel better we did a fuel pump, fuel hose, fuel filter, anti siphoning valve, ect on a boat 20 years ago. Got pissed when it still would not run and punched the dash and the gauge dropped from 1/3 tank to empty. $200 later and it was a stuck gauge.
