Jinma 204
I was using my tractor the other day - about 500 hours on the clock - and heard a clunk. A quick investigation revealed the fan was missing a blade, which I found nearby. Fortunately there was minimal damage to the radiator. I removed the radiator and when I took off the fan (the 4 bolts were on tight) I could see that it had a number of fractures, particularly on the section that attaches to the metal plate. There were also scrapings of the white plastic on the edges of the metal shroud that bolts to the radiator.

Just wondering if anyone else has had similar problems? I'm waiting for a new fan and was thinking of removing the shroud to give more tolerance around the edges of the fan - would this pose any problems?

Appreciate any advice

If your fan sets more than 3/4" away from the radiator you will ,more than likely have heating problems, if you remove the shroud . If the shroud fan opening is too close to the edge ,can you trim it back a little ?
Make sure your engine mounting bolts are tight as well as the radiator bolts . Sounds like something is moving more than it should .

I agree with Al, sounds like something's loose. My JM254 engines would occasionally loosen the bolts holding them to the ladder frame rails.

If yours is configured like mine were, the airflow through the radiators is bad enough already. The battery blocks the lower third - and there's a vortex created by the forward mounted intake. Poor little fan is fighting the odds already. Removing the shroud would only make them worse.

Find what's moving, adjust your clearances, and make things rigid again.

Thanks for the advice - I will check the mounting bolts and give everything a tighten. As it can get hot here in summer (100 degrees plus) I'll try to keep the shroud.

Have had some fun finding a fan - I'm in Australia and eventually tracked one down in New Zealand. Would love to hear from any other Jinma (or related) owners in Australia about their experiences finding parts.

Try HERE Mark. Prices are in USD. But in todays global market place, it's credit cards that talk - and UPS or DHL that delivers.

lets not forget you can always use an elctric fan they can usually be either a push or a puller by reversing the blade. the more expensive ones will come on at a set temp ie: 180. a cheap one can always be found in the junk yard. now you can eliminate the jinma fan and shroud.

Well, I have a bunch of fans for 254, from an ordering error /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif One free fan shipped from the states will probably cost as much as 5 fans there. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Anyway, you need to see where it is hitting on the shroud. You do need it, but the radiator position has to be adjusted. There are slots on the bottom radiator mount for movement and spacers for height. Also, make sure you have a "J" rod from top of radiator to engine. This adjusts the tilt of the radiator. I have seen some Jinmas without this. Only the radiator hoses holding things in place. I believe the blade tips need to be inside of the shroud, but not looking at my tractor right now. It was a tight fit. I believe I had the shroud hanging over the fan, installed radiator finger tight, then bolted shroud on. Then made the radiator final adjustments. But, its been a while.

PS: This is with a 254/284 w/Y385 engine. Not sure what engine is in yours, but should be a similiar deal.

Mine has the J rod JOHN S is talking about but is not hooked to anything, with my hood the rad is held by sides of the core support form the fiberglass hood. the rod is sticking up in air to nowhere, /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif KEEP the shroud it WILL be needed if running the jinma hard in HOT temps.

Just a followup - I put the fan back on without the shroud - not intentional, I just forgot to slip it over the fan before I bolted the radiator back on, and being lazy, thought I may as well try it without.

I ran it on a hot day - over 100 degrees - slashing for a couple of hours and it almost boiled.

I pulled the radiator off and put back the shroud and so far no problems in similar heat (gotta love these Aussie summers!)

Thanks for the help

Don't know how the Australian export models are configured, but those coming to America have the air filter cannister forward of the radiator. That vortex I mentioned - caused by the intake being in front of the fan - contributes significantly to the heat buildup problem. Poor little plastic fan just can't draw enough air through the radiator fins.

I remedied that situation with a 34 inch section of 2" suction hose. One end slips over the intake pipe on the breather assembly, the other end goes along the side of the fuel tank. First, remoting the intake eliminates that vortex, and second - the air down by my left shin is a lot cooler than up there in front of the hot radiator.

Come winter time, the opposite problem can occur; engine temp doesn't get up to the desired 80C. Replace the "summer section" of hose with a 26" piece. Only this time put the intake end over the exhaust manifold.
