I am not a pro, but would like your opinion on doing the following. Even my terminology may be way off but here goes.

I noticed today on my front axle--I will call it "a nuckle", I noticed there is a felt type of packing about two inches in diamater--I noticed hunks of this material are gone so I think it needs to be replaced. What comes off to do this job, and can I get into real trouble here?

At the same time I noticed the boot covering part of the steering mechanism in the same area is shot. I have the new boot, I see the clamp ring where it is fixed on one end, but it looks like it needs to be slipped on from the other end, right near where one of those felt washers? are located. Hopefully I could effect both repairs at the same time?

Please educate me. Thanks.

Replacing the felt washer is pretty easy,if you remove the top of the left or right drive standing shaft housing there is a bolt in the center when removed will let the whole assembly drop down to replace the felt washer,I would go ahead and replace the 2-oil seals while you have it apart, there are some bearings and gears that will come out when you remove it just take your time and watch how it comes apart. You need to take the steering joint off the cylinder to replace the boot cover

Ranch hand was a huge help to me on my 254 front leak, basically same thing your mentioning. He even had a step by step picture procedure on his site.

Thanks for the pictures. They make the job perfectly clear. I would not have known what part to remove first.

So far, I have been able to fix everything on my 224 with the help of this forum.
