hi guys - i have had a good read and i am really not sure what my problem is..

My 4WD stopped working as i was pulling a tree out - reversing with it chained..

It started clicking, slipping and then engaging.. slipping and engaging.

I read the forums here and many people mentioned the six balls on the driveshaft. I pulled back the sleeve but the drive shaft seems ok. The whole shaft is rotating intermittently

Both front wheels are now freely rotating even with 4WD engaged at the lever.. One wheel is making a funny clicking noise
Does anyone have any ideas? please? Or what i should do to diagnose further?

If the drive shaft looks ok, then it should be inside the front diff. Maybe a bearing gave up and the gears are not meshing right.

Do you have access to any diagrams?

4wd system is weak on the 254. They are known to have problems like this when you do this kind of work with it. Best to just run it in 2wd mode for hard labor (pulling, using the loader etc). As for what could be wrong you probably have front axle problems with the clicking. Possibly gear issues inside the housing by the transmission. Especially with the free wheeling.

Good luck,

I'm confused, what do your balls have to do with your tractor not working?

I had a ts354 for several years. I once broke several teeth off the ring gear in the front differential using it for a bull dozer.
Start taking the front end apart. You've got broken parts.
