2013 Jinma 254
Hi guys,
I recently bought a new Jinma 254 with the Jinma backhoe. I love it so far, it has the pros/cons I expected going into it, and will work out fine for my applications. However, most things don't come with manuals, and I'm already accumulating a lot of questions.

The first I have is how do I check the backhoe oil level? I can't seem to find a dipstick or anything. When I open the fill cap there's a filter screen in there, but that's it.

I sure wish the backhoe had come with a manual!

I'm sure that's just the first of many, many questions I'll have. Thanks in advance!

I have the manual in a pdf document. If you will PM me your email addy, I'll shoot it down to you.
I used to own a LW-6 model and it had a dipstick in the top of the reservoir.

Does the BH have a label on it to identify specifically which model BH it is? 3PH or frame mount? The two I have most commonly heard of are the JW-06 and the HW-03. I have the HW-03 and on it's tank, there was a pipe that soood up with a bolt screwed into it, right alongside the filler neck. That bolt had a rod welded to it, and was the dipstick... The filler neck on mine protruded down into the tank a little. You need to make sure the fill level is below the bottom of the neck, because if you fill it up above that point, the expansion of the fluid when it warms up will force fluid up and out the vent holes in the filler cap... You can see this prety clearly if you pull that screen/strainer up out of the filler neck.

Here is a pic of my original BH tank. After slightly overfilling it and having it vent oil onto my boots a time or two, I removed the dipstick and slid on a piece of hose and the filter full of dessicant. Then I plugged the vent holes in the filler cap. The dessicant helps keep the moisture in the tank under control...

It's labelled "HW-03," and it's the subframe mounted version. I have the similar breather tube assembly next to the filler cap, with a bolt on the end of it. I'll take that out tonight and see if there's a dipstick attached to it (I'll bet that's where it is).

That's a great suggestion with the dessicant filter to keep moisture out of the oil. Do I use ISO 46 hydraulic oil? And how much does it hold if I need to drain and change it?

Unless it is really hot where you are at, I would suggest AW 32 or ISO 32. South of Sacto in Galt, you would probably be alright with 46...

That was it. The tube to the right of the filler cap (on mine) with the bolt in the top has a dipstick welded to the end of it.

Thanks for all the help!
