Jinma 254
I have a 1991 Jinma 254. Recently I have been having trouble with the tractor moving under load, or going up a slight grade and etc. I am also not able to shift when the engine is running. I also noticed that the pto shaft is running all the time/ even with the switch being disengaged. Any suggestions of what the problem could be would be greatly appreciated. Also, approximately what am I looking at dollar wise for the repair?

There is a temporeary third option. The PTO is equipped with two controls, an Engage Disengage lever on the right side of the tranny and a speed select lever, 540, neutral, 1,000 rpm near and to the right of the PTO. You will be able to safely stop the PTO until you can repair the problem.

The engine power problem is going to involve the injector pump, speed governor and fuel filters.

Has the injector/governor ever been serviced? Oil flushed and changed?

Thanks for the response. I have serviced the tractor and changed all of the fluids each year. I am not sure about the Engage/ Disengage lever on the right side. I don't think this tractor has that control. I have the pto engage lever behind the seat in the neutral position and the pto shaft still rotates.

From what I can get out of this post it sounds like you are having clutch problems, you have 2-possible solutions

First see if it can be adjusted, second replace the clutch assembly

What is the history on the tractor? Hours ? purchased new by you ? Serviced ?Location ?
are you mechanical ?

Thanks for your response. The tractor is a 1991 model. I bought it from a salesman in Ind. It was a demo model with 29 hrs. on it. It presently has 496 hrs. on it. I have serviced it each year, used it on the farm here mostly to move dirt, manure, some brushhog mowing, running a hay rake and tether on it. It was retro fitted by "Agracat" out of Ark. I believe. It is represented as an Agracat 2940 25hp compact. Perhaps I used the wrong words when I said the "tractor is losing power". The engine is running fine, the tractor just stops moving forward or backwards. I then would stop, cut the engine and wait a few min. and restart and everything would be fine. It will work for a while and then go back to the same motion problem again. Thanks again for your response. TJ

If the tractor moves a little more like normal in lower gears and/or low range, then you're almost certainly looking at a clutch issue.

Yes, its the clutch. You can try to adjust it but more than likely you will need a new clutch sooner or later.

I had the same trouble with my Agracat when it was new, 3 hours on ticker but had sat for 2 years after the boys in Arkansas destroyed Agracat. It would stop moving forward and the motor would rev freely whenever I tried to work it, even a small load in the bucket prior to that. Anyway, I had to take my loader off, open the left side of the clutch bell housing and look around. What I saw was lots of rust in the housing and the 6 small rollers that let the clutch "articulate" ( i guess that's a big word for move), were stuck and would not let the arms fully engage the clutch. I worked each roller by hand with WD and PB blaster until I got them all moving freely. After that no more trouble and I could not stop the tractor no matter how I loaded it. To let any water out of the bell housing, I drilled a small drain hole in the bottom. No problems since, now over 350 hours on it. Good luck.
