Discovered when I turn the steering wheel lock to lock it only goes to lock to the left. turning to the right it doesn't
go nearly as far. It hasn't always been this way. I also noticed that if I apply a slight pressure to the steering wheel
once the wheels have stoped turning, the steering wheel will continue to turn without turning the wheels. any ideas
as to what's going on and what the fix might be?

Well it could be that the seal in the cylinder is bad, bypassing fluid in one direction. Another thing to look at that I have experienced is that the tie-rod lock nut where it attaches to the cylinder rod end(under the rubber dust boot) has come loose, and the tie-rod end is unscrewing from the cylinder rod. This makes the rod longer, so the wheels still go full left, but the cylinder bottoms out and stops to the right, and the lengthend rod length can't pull the wheels as far to the right. Eventually it will fall off and you will have NO steering:)... The same thing(wouldn't turn as far to the right) got me looking under the boot and I found the problem quickly. The second issue you describe I think is normal, and it is the rotary vane pump/valve bypassing internally as you max out the pressure by continuing to turn the wheel(send pump pressure) against a dead headed cylinder.
