I was using my Jinma 284. It died and when I tried to restart the battery seemed to be dead. I jumped the battery from my pickup and the tractor ran fine. I tried to start it the next day and it is completely dead. I tried to jump it off and it will not even attempt to turn over. The horn will not blow and the guages do not move. Any ideas on what might have happened and what I should check? As you can tell I am not a mechanic and know very little about this?

Thanks for your help.

Hey Don,

Could be several things.
- Loose connections at the battery or corrosion.
- Battery is completely dead, won't take a jump.
- Battery is dead because the alternator is not charging it.
I would try checking the connections first, then leave the jumper cables on for about 10 minutes to charge the battery a little, then try to start it. After it starts up (hopefully) then get a voltmeter and check the voltage at the battery. If the alternator is working it should be above 12 volts, usually around 13.5. You can also take the alternator and battery down to most auto parts stores and they will test them. I believe the battery will need to be charged to be tested properly.

Thanks TJW. This is a new battery that is less than 6 months old. I have checked on connections and everything seems to be fine. I did have a few loose connections on the alternator. It still will not jump off after 10 to 15 minutes of charging. It does not seem to be pulling the battery down on my pickup when I try to jump it. Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Don

Battery ground cable. Remove the bolt where it's connected to the frame. Get a grinder or some extra coarse sandpaper. Go right down to bare metal all around the bolt hole, then get all the paint off the inside of the cable lug. Clean/oil the threads on the bolt, and put it all back together.

Whether or not this gets your tractor running again, cover the lug and bolt head and bare metal with dielectric compound (or thick grease) to help slow down the electrolytic corrosion.

Thanks Greg.

I don't think it is the ground. I will definitely sand down the ground and tighten it up. I followed the positive battery cable and found where it was connected. I accidentally shorted the postive terminal and the ground. I am definitely getting power to this point. I don't know if this is the starter or a cylinoid. Does anyone else have any ideas on what I can try next?

Thanks,

Don

IF you get power to the big wire on the starter, there should be a second wire going to the Ampmeter and then the fuse box, check the fuses. YOu can bypass all that by jumping direct to the solenoid but you have to make darn sure you are in netural or your tractor may try to run over you, (don't ask how I know...and thank God for creeper gear). This is probably where I say "professional closed coarse, dont' try this at home".

After you are in netural, you can jump from the big wire on the starter to the small wire on the solenoid, if it goes, it is not the starter, battery or solenoid, but could be fuse, key switch, etc.

If it's not turning over at all - no clicking/groaning/grunting/farting/whatever - you may have blown the system fuse. Sometimes the wrong size fuse is in there in the first place. It should be green and say 30A. It's the only 30A in the system, and is the first in line under the fuse box cover.

Thanks I found the problem. I jumped across the starter and it started right up. I made sure that it was in neutral. I then checked the ignition switch and tried to jump across the wires. It did not work. I finally got a wiring diagram and realized that their was a 30 amp system fuse. The fuse was blown and when I replaced it everyone worked great. Thanks for all of your input and help.
