Hi all, I need some guidance on an issue with my tractor.

I went out to day to start it up and move it, and it barely started, running on what seemed to be only one cylinder and was pouring out great volumes of white smoke. Checking revealed the fuel in the sediment bowl was cloudy with obvious water sediment in the bottom. I presume this got in the tank through condensation primarily, since we've had about a month or more of heavy rains interspersed with very hot sunny days and the tank was down to about two or three gallons of fuel. My oversight. I do know better, but I was lured into a false sense of security because it is parked under cover. What didn't register with me was that the cover had deteriorated so badly that i t might as well have been nonexistent.

I drained most of the fuel from the tank and dumped in a bottle of diesel additive I had on hand, pulled the feed line at the banjo fitting on the bottom of the priming pump, and cleared the sediment bowl. My question is, what next? I have a gallon of denatured alcohol on hand. Can I dump that in the fuel tank to get the remaining water to mix with the diesel and drain it out?

Due to my health issues with the recurrence of my cancer, I need to sell this thing and need it running and looking good. I'd prefer, of course, not to have to remove the tank since the loader is parked on the ground and would have to be raised to get to the tank. Will I need to pull the injectors or can I just prime and bleed the system and then start it up?

All advice is sincerely appreciated.

Myself I wouldn't want water in any form to travel thru the injector pump or injectors. I'd drain the tank completely, clean the strainer at the bottom of the tank by removing the fuel bowl, get some clean rags and wipe out the inside of the tank using a stick or someone with small hands,(I'm assuming your tank has the fill thats 2-3" in diameter so it's a good size). Clean the strainer at the banjo fitting at the pump, replace the fuel filter and fill it up with fresh fuel with a good fuel lubricant.
Water be it suspended or free plays he77 with fuel systems..Mike

I agree, drain it 100% and clean it or you are looking for trouble.

I see this every year in boats. It's much cheaper in the long run to keep your fuel tank topped off. This will eliminate the condensation.

Sorry about your health issues.

Rich --

I'm truly sad to hear about your health issues.

I would agree with the others that to the greatest extent you can remove the water mechanically the better, you don't want it going through the injectors.

Take care of yourself.

Concur. Remove the tank for thorough cleaning and drying. A good method is to take it to a radiator shop. The can boil it out in their radiator tank. That will also remove the paint/scale/rust that I can pretty guarantee is in there. Before reinstalling, blow thru with compressed air for the final drying

Thanks all, I got it taken care of. Unfortunately due to the way it was parked, removing the tank was not an option as the loader was in a position that prevented opening the bonnet. I flushed the tank a dozen times until it ran clear and purged it with a mix of acetone, methanol and diesel to remove any traces of water. Mission accomplished - reassembled sediment bowl, fuel line and pumped the primer and cranked it up with the compression release open for a half minute or so. When I closed the cop release it fired instantly and ran cleanly. To say I am relieved would be an understatement. No sign of diesel bugs at all, only tramp water.

Thanks, Tommy. I appreciate the kind words and all the help you've provided over the years. When I sell the tractor I'll be giving its new owner your contact info for any parts he may need.

I've been flushing my system with good Canadian whiskey in moderation. It does seem to potentiate the pain medications I'm on and it tastes way better. :drink:

The chemo regimen is doing some real good so far. There's no real chance of a cure, but it should slow the progression of things to give me a few more months of a reasonable quality of life, and that's about all I could hope for. Still working and playing, but winding down the working part and getting ready to ramp up the playing in a big way. Life is good.
