Have any of you installed a suction strainer on the intake side of the Backhoe pump? Debris in the hydraulic fluid seems to really take a toll on the BH controls.

If anyone has done it, how did you attach the strainer? I have a Northern Tool suction strainer but haven't decided how to attach it yet. I've thought about cutting the line and using barb connectors but I don't know the inside diameter of the hose.

I've flushed my tank and it was loaded with paint chips and debris. I haven't hooked my BH up yet and I want to prevent control problems.

What type fitting is the outlet on your tank? A common practice is to use a fine mesh strainer that has a pipe thread fitting. The end of this strainer looks like a pipe adapter fitting. The strainer(1 1/4-1 1/2" NPT) screws into the tank and the outlet line(3/4"NPT) that supplies the pump screws into the strainer. They have these on the Northern tool website.

I don't think the strainer insert will work. The hose is attached to the tank via a banjo fitting with a long hollow bolt through the center.

Thanks anyway.

I use my LW6 with a PTO pump. The suction hose as supplied with the hoe was too small to feed the pump. I welded in a 1 1/2 NPT half coupling and installed a suction strainer as mentioned by RonMar. You might have to change the hose to suit your tractor. I went to a 1" suction hose to feed the PTO pump.

What PTO pump are you using? how many gal per minute? Where did you buy it and how much? Thanks for your help.

I am using a Prince 11 gal/min pump. The rate is much too high so I installed a flow control valve. I used the pump because I had it for a prior project. The LW6 Jinma backhoe needs about 6-7 gal/min. Prince makes a 7 gal/min pump Model HC-7A. These pumps sell for $400-$500 USD new. I originally bought mine from WW Grainger
