Massey Ferguson 254 John Deere 990-4700-5310-new holland tn65-kubota l3300-l4200Ferguson to 30,1951-to30,1954, ford 2n 1947, ford 2n 1943 jd 5200, jd 301a, alllis chalmers 45c, John Deere 5200
I have a problem with my jd 4700, even when the rpm is idling most of the time it has a hard time to shifting in and out of neutral, the shift handle feels like it flexes and I have to push the forwards pedal just a bid to get it to shift , any ideas on this? Also even when idling it has the intention and slowly will to moves backwards, is my idling speed maybe too high? Or are there other adjustment possible?

HST tranny? and shifting between the three ranges?

Some wording and missing words makes it hard to decipher just what is happening. Maybe others will decipher better but help will be forthcoming.

Nice lineup of tractors.. and I sure liked my TO-30 way back when.

Since he wrote "forwards pedal", it's an HST transmission.
The range lever on these models is pretty long and springy...feels like an old VW Beetle shift lever. I had a 4400 (mine was a reverser transmission) and I found keeping the lever (where it enters the transmission case) well lubricated with Fluid Film helped a lot with those shift levers.
Since I'm not a fan of HST transmissions, I've never had one...but IIRC, there are adjustments to be made under the pedals...one of which is a magnet and potentiometer (sp?). There is information in the service manual describing how to adjust these.

Roy, thinking you figured right on the HST but missed that it prolly was the range lever shifting from A-N-B-C that causes the OP concern.. i.e. needing to partially "engage" the tranny with the forward pedal to get the gears between ranges to match up when shifting.

I experience that sometime with shifting my 4300 HST into lowest range ( "A" ) and touch the forward pedal a tad to feel the gears mesh.

But don't think it has anything to do with those pedals for adjustment, nor the magnet that is for the cruise control feature.

IMO, the HST tranny can't be beat (unless doing field work). ;) Maybe there is an adjustment but have not felt a particular need to correct this anomaly.

This is my first HST tractor bought it looking like crap fixed it up, but now looks nice again, Yes it is a automatic transmission and mostly the problem is from A to neutral or back, don't use the higher gears too much, will try the lubrication first, thanks .

Your service tech manual may describe how to adjust that shifter. Glad to see you got that tractor right side up.. :D

Looks great.

If it is trying to creep in reverse with your foot off the pedal that is the likely issue. The gears need to come to a complete stop to engage easily. Normally just moving forward or back an inch should allow the gears to mesh.

I would also use all three ranges periodically to keep the moving parts free to move. Lubrication for the linkage is a good thing too.

I have a 4600 with the same behavior. You're shifting mechanical gears, if there's pressure on them, you're going to have difficulty. My Polaris ATV, Kawasaki ATV, etc, are all the same way. Park your car on a hill and try and shift out of neutral, it'll do the same thing.

I tried to adjust my creeping at low rpm as per jd shop, manual, but you need special tools to get to the top of the servo trough a hole on the left side where the left brake is located, could not find the tools for sale, so end up,bringing it to jd dealer, they say they adjusted the servo motor will change me $108 , not bad, but they also mentioned I had one cylinder in my engine not working, they mentioned a replacement injector pump is $4500??? Told them don't do it, I am going to find a solution myself, but now i need help, any body got an idea on how to check or repair injector pumps? Still have to pick up tractor , because they are close in weekends.
