A couple months ago, I went to a local dealer just to browse and talk to them about compact tractors.

The sales guy showed me a 1987 JD 1050 that he thought would be "perfect".
Diesel, FEL, box blade (think that wad a JD also), turf tires, power steering, 4wd. 1100 or so hours on the meter.

The more I've looked at different machines, the more I've thought this would really work well for fixing up a gravel driveway, building a new driveway (maybe 500 ft for both combined), doing some re-grading of the yard, and some miscellaneous work related to a house addition.

My thought at this point is to resell the tractor after the addition and heavy landscaping work is done. So my main concern is how much I'd get back out when I resell.

Not sure how long it's been for sale, but at least two months and it's still there. Assuming everything works properly, what do you think a good price is?

Thanks

I bought a used JD 1050 in 1992 with about 2,500 hours. The tractor now has over 4,500 hours. It has been very dependable and only required a few minor repairs. You can move a lot of dirt with this tractor using a box blade and FEL and should have no problem building a driveway. Sorry but I can not help with advice on the resale value. Good luck with your projects.

I forgot to say, their asking price is $9k.

That 1050 was JD's top of the line compact for years. So that's a decent price on a well-known good tractor - if it is in good shape. It would be nice if it also had the matching backhoe. That was a common attachment at the time. I've seen similar models of Yanmar 336 and JD 1050 with a half that many hours in "always garaged and polished" shape go for as much as 3K more or even higher. But I've not seen them for less than about 8.5K. I'm assuming that it is in good shape and everything works right. In an old tractor, condition is everything.
As to whether you would get that back on re-selling it is anyone's guess. You might ask the dealer about their policy on putting it back on their floor on consignment. Be interesting to hear what they say.

My new experience... I just finished a deal on a 1988 1050, 2100 hrs w/loader and backhoe. He was asking $9,500 and I got him down to $8,500. I think I just got really lucky.
