has anyone replace a clutch on a Deere 1070. its a daul stage clutch. i have never replaced a daul clutch before. looking at the parts diagram on the deere web site, looks pretty complex. should i have to replace the whole assembely or can i just replace the pressure plates and bearings. or do i have to split the tractor before i order anything.
also who make the best aftermarket clutches and where can i get them.
thanks in advance.

Since you have an illustration, I'm assuming you have the manual.
It's not a happy thing, but you will be better off splitting the tractor to determine what you need to replace.
Once you have it split, you can determine if salvaging any parts is worth splitting the tractor again if they should fail.

Please keep us/me informed as to what you have to do. I have a 1070 and have readjusted the freeplay once already. Not looking forward to replacing the clutch packs. Thanks.

A job like this depends on your temperment if you do it yourself. I did it once. I used to build engines and granted, they were mostlly out of cars but still, I am no stranger to wrenches.
I'd rather stick my head in a badger den than to have to split a tractor but that's just me as I have been known to throw a wrench or two.
There are people on this forum (DKrug for one) that can do a job like this as easily as they can take a nap. So with advice as to starting a job like this, get a handle on the type of person giving it.

ok, let me know if i'm going crazy or not. after searching of the replacement clutch discs for my tractor. first i found them on jdparts.com, prices were a little high. then i found them on tractorclutchzone.com, price about the same ($1,200). now i found them at local tracor parts dealer (junkyard). the price was about 1/4.......about $300.
could this be correct?
not sure who make the pads from the first 2 place, but i'm pretty sure the "junkyard" guys are A&I.
new to this stuff, any word of advice?

Used clutches...well, how many hours do you want to operate the tractor before you have to replace the clutch again? If you do buy and install used parts and it turns out the part is defective, most salvage yards will replace the part but installation hours and costs are not covered.
If you do go with a used two-stage clutch, I suggest you replace any potential wear components with new parts. If you have the maintenance/overhaul manual for your 1070 (avalible on CD-ROM for about 50 bucks), you can get the specs for the pressure plate and other "consumable" parts.
Although any clutch replacement is expensive (and two-stage clutches are even more expensive) if you have a couple thousand hours on it, you got your money's worth. If you got less then a thousand hours, somebody is riding the clutch.

these are new discs, same part number as the JD dealer.....the guy just own the junkyard. he deals in mostly older tractor parts. i don't think i would want to replace junk with more junk.
i was thinking that the discs and bearing would cost around $1200, but when i saw these prices, something wasn't adding up. i was under the impression that A&I discs were good.

Well, A&I's website looks professional and they have a pretty lengthy dealer network. That's a good indication their products are of good quality.

My apologies on that previous post...I thought you were going to buy used parts.

Good luck with the repair!
