JD 1830
i inherited a old tractor, two wheel drive, John Deere 1830, and its old, well to some lol. was pushing snow and then could smell some smoke and looked and saw hydraulic fluid all over engine, shut off investigated but saw nothing, was up road a 1/2 mile, drove home, all was fine, added some fluid and started it again and nothing, i did see that the main Hydraulic motor is driven off front and i assume that is where the leak was and fan blew it all over engine. should i get help and work it under load and see if there is a seal gone, loose hose connection ect. one more note, a 1/2 hr before i stopped to talk to neighbour and when i went to leave the hydraulics shuttered when i lifted the main boom, i own a excavator, don't know the tractor lingo, any help would really be appreciated. thanks, Dan

I had that happen with my 1840 and it was a massive leak, turned out it was the hose clamp on the transmission oil cooler failed and the hose separated from the cooler. Could not see where it was coming from until I got the bonnet off and I had visions of a blown pump seal, etc. The fix was a two dollar clamp and 5 gals of Hygard. Replaced a bunch of older clamps with new SS ones, just in case others were worn.
