Hello, asking for help with my 1958 John Deere 420 6V, Vintage tractor enthusiast, I am having some issues that have to be carburator related, with clean fresh fuel a clean sediment bowl I am still having issues with this tractor running smoothly and idling for long periods of time, it is very hard starting after sitting for a few weeks, 6 volt system, Looking for some advise as to a trustworthy shop that can do a good carb rebuild and then do a field test or bench set up so I will be able to put it back on without any more issues, I am sure I can get it apart and clean it I just feel having someone that has experience with this item could sure save me some frustration down the line. Thank you for reading my post.

The 6 volt system is a little weak but a good running tractor will still pop right off with a low battery. The carbs aren't bad to work on but the brass nozzle can be hard to get out. Robert's has all of the parts that you might break:) I haven't dealt with their rebuilds personally but I think you'd be satisfied. Also watch your throttle shaft to see if it is surging back and forth.

Not sure on the hard starting after sitting but you could have some worn points in the distributor. Try polishing them with some worn 600 grit followed by some brown paper to clean them up. If that helps you'll want to replace them eventually.

I used my 420 for a couple years as my main lawn mower on 6 acres. Fun stuff!

How is your compression? And what is the age of the points, condenser, plugs, plug wires, and coil?
Do you have some very sloppy parts like the throttle shaft going into the carb? My 420U had a sloppy shaft/bushing and it would be a trick and some machining to fix. But the other non-carb parts as mentioned were the key to a good start.
Might also see how well fuel flows from the tank to the bowl. If slow, then there may be some debris or constriction in the fuel line or the bottom of the tank. A temporary fuel supply to the carb will also answer that question.
Wish you well. Wish I still had my 420U.

I would recommend Green Magazine. I get it every month and wish I had a carb to work on!!!

They have a web site and message board. Very nice.
