John Deere 2048 Sabre bad hydro trans?

hi,
I've got a JD Sabre 2048 lawn tractor, with a bad hydrostatic trans. Is there a way to get this repaired/rebuilt for $300 to $400 or is that a pipe dream? I've checked the oil level and it's in spec - it's at 73mm down from the neck. I don't see where there are much other things to check - short of going into the box.
Anybody got ideas?

If it a Tuff Torq transaxle, they sell rebuild kits. Also they recommend synthetic 5w-50 for most of the newer ones.
Once you determine the type, you can do a search on some "other" lawn mower sites and get lots of good information on rebuilding or replacing it.

Looking at Untitled Document it appears that you have a Tuff Torq K65 or K66 transaxle. This might fit John Deere GT262 GEAR DRIVE TRANSAXLE TUFF TORQ GT242 - eBay (item 370246787333 end time Sep-11-10 12:26:30 PDT)

As previously mentioned you can buy rebuild kits or whole transaxles from Tuff Torq. Lots of garden tractors use similar transaxles so you should be able to find a used one.

Hi,
Thanks for the heads up. I've found the ID tag on the transaxle - it says "K65-SBR.....S/N: 011578.......JDHW P/N: AM126957"

Also, I've now pulled the hubs off and the woodruf keys do not appear to be sheared. So I'm thinking it really is inside the transaxle.

Big pain to rebuild?

More news....as troubleshooting continues.
I pulled the input pulley off - the one that the drive belt wraps around - and the splines inside of it are gone. The splines on the trans look salvagable - so hopefully just a pulley will do it. Going tomorrow to get one.
