John Deere 2240
I just purchased a 81 John Deere 2240 and working on repairing issues. The one I have a problem with is the 3 point lever has severed right at the rockshaft housing. I appears to be rusted tight but am not sure yet. What I am wondering has anyone dealt with replacing the 3 point lever and od you have to remove the rockshaft housing to fix this issue. I have a couple of pictures to see. Please help. 20170815_191824.jpg20170815_191908.jpg20170815_192000.jpg

Rockshaft housing does need to come off to replace the shaft. A roll pin secures the shaft on the inside. It is a pretty simple repair, just need to be sure to get new lever positioned properly. Can be installed 180 degrees out of time and rockshaft will not work.. Also recommend replacing orings in rockshaft control valve while housing is off. They have a history of going bad causing hydraulics to overheat and rockshaft to leak down.

Do you have all the 'missing' parts not shown in your pic? (Lever, quadrant linkages etc.?)

Rockshaft housing is heavy so suggest you have Soldier B on-hand to assist.

You may need to apply heat to move the seized shaft remnant. Be careful.

Also don't re-use the roll-pin. A new pin will be a secure tight fit.

Good advice from JD110 re: O-rings.

Yea I have all the missing parts. I just did not take a picture of them. Thanks for the advice, it is a bit intimidating, was not really wanting to break it down that far but that is what is going to have to happen.

I (and others will) suggest you buy the Technical Manual from your nearest dealer. Step-by-step instructions and money well-spent. Keep us updated.

So I have not started on this yet. I am still a bit intimidated about when I get the housing off and getting it put back together. I called and talked to a tractor mechanic and he made it sound way worse to get it all fixed, not sure if that was a mechanic wanting the work or not. However, I have got a new rockhouse gasket and o rings coming. I also ordered the technical manual and it did not give me as much information as I was hoping. Is this a hard task or will I be able to do it and get it back together right. Please give me your thoughts and feedback.

Which manual did you get and from where?
What info is it that you need and don't have?
Do you have a 'Soldier B' to help you lift the heavier items? Maybe Mrs.P (with clean hands) to read out instructions and take pictures to aid reassembly?
Maybe tell us your age, physical capabilities, available tools, workshop condition, etc.
How much time do you have available? (Is this an after work task, weekend-only event or are you perhaps, 'retired with time on your hands')??

It's hard for us to know if you can 'do it' if we don't know your abilities and environment.

jd110 has already told you it's "a pretty simple repair" but if you're nervous after reading the manual then I'm doubting your fortitude in the matter.

Did the 'mechanic' give you a price for the job?

This is a one-day job for the home-based owner with mechanical abilities.
