John Deere 2440
Hello everyone. I am 100% new to this sight, so please excuse my rookie qualities. I need an answer on my big screw up. I was driving my dad's John Deere 2440 doing some ground prep work and it died on me. Turns out that I ran out of diesel. My dad and I put diesel in and bleed the main line, but not the 4 injectors at the top. It started up and ran okay except the following: (1) there is no more low idle, it stays running at working speed and (2) we can't shut it off!. The kill pull lever won't cut of the fuel. There were zero issues with this tractor before my super bonehead mistake. I'm hoping to get out to the ranch tomorrow with anyone's ideas so I can try and get back into the good graces of my dad. Thank you everyone.

:welcome:
Sounds as if metering rod in inj pump is stuck in wide open position. To repair one would need to carefully remove inj pump cover(parts key 17) taking note(pictures) of location of each end of spring under the cover to access metering rod.

Funny story, This a common diesel fuel break down issue with John Deere diesels and TX jim has really answered it for you. I would recommend taking it to a Diesel specialist to do the repairs as they are tricky as. I had a similair problem with an injector pump on a JD5820, with a Stanadyne DB2 pump. It falled to start as the metering rod was stuck closed. This happens after the D-injector pump runs entirely dry of diesel
while running and then you go to start again and again and you find its not working as it should. So these pumps are to be cared for and to be operated carefully when you do any fuel system changes. Whether its servicing fuel system or out of fuel etc.
Best of luck and don't let Dad smank you to hard as its the tractors fault. Make sure you have a back up plan next time or even a spare fuel tanker close by.
