John Deere 24A
Hello,
I bought a 24a a few months ago. The plan was to use it for a few small jobs and pass it along. It has the Wisconsin engine and levers on the side to steer. I have been using it 15 minutes here and there and it has worked great. But when using it yesterday to level and area I noticed the right side felt like it was loosing some power and then the left side as well. It still works when going backward but when i move the right level forwards the tires do not move.

Can someone point me in the direction of what to look for? One thread said steering clutches. Are they something that go from working to not in a matter of minutes.

The hydraulic fluid was high on the dip stick and appears old.

I have not ordered a manual yet as i am having trouble finding one.

Thanks,

Believe that was made for Deere by the Owatonna co. and was the Mustang. Had one of those 25 years ago, and if I recall, there was an adjustment bolt/nut arrangement on the access panel both sides between the front/rear wheels. A pic or two of that area would help discuss further.

Getting a manual would be important investment.

Look for the changes forward/reverse in the variable speed belts, to see that the variator pulleys are moving correctly and also that the belt is not worn.

Look something like this?

I downloaded a service manual. That should of been my first step. I am going to spend a few evenings going over the machine and seeing where the problem is. Thanks again. Hopefully it will be something obvious once I start taking it apart.

I read through the service manual and made a list of parts to check and adjust. Starting with free and easy. The first check was adjusting the drive clutches. This fixed my problem and I am moving in all directions again.
