John Deere 2640
My Tractor A John Deere 2640 was left to sit for several months. When I tried to start it, it would crank but did not Fire at all. Wondering what the issue may be and wonder if it has a fuel shut off valve. To stop the Engine there is a lever that is pulled to stop Engine. Would imagine that cause the fuel to be exhaused since this is a Diesel and it starts upon pulling the lever.
could someone tell me if there is a mechanical or Electrical Shut off Valve, if so where it is located, because I do not see one, unless it is mechanical and part of the Diesel Pump.
Where to start to Trouble shoot the problem.

Nothing electrical. Either a lever or cable to the injector pump. Early model has lever, Late model has cable. Early model has spring return, check that if you have early model. Late model with cable has clamps to hold the cable that may have slipped.

Confirmed everything today on visit to the Farm. The Tractor has the lever, and everything seems to be working as built.
Thank you for this information.

Another quesiton. There appears to be a light for Glow Plugs, that comes on and stays on, but I could not see any glow plugs or wires going to glow plugs
Does this tractor have Glow Plugs.

Remove one injector out of sil head and attach it again outside to the inj line ......crank the engine and see if fuel is spayed out DO NOT COME NEAR THAT SPRAY......VERY DANGEROUS......if no spray .......injectorpump is faulty !

This sounds like an excellent way to determine if it is getting fuel, Do you know how to remove the Hood on this Machine. How is it fastened.

Nuts at each corner, side shields/grill come off to get to front nuts

Noticed Yesterday that there is some sort of container, Maybe Glass located behind the fuel pump that the line from the Fuel pump is connected to. What is this and does the line coming into the Diesel Pump come from this container. it appears to have about an inch at the bottom [about where the line from the pump enters that has different coloration. It looks like it might be some sort of settlement device. Any ideas about this. Thank you both for your comments.

do not remove injector, if you want to check for fuel just loosen injector line and spin motor. the glass you are referring to is fuel filter if its not full it won't start. You really should get somebody that knows about tractors to help you

If inj pump is worn you wil get flow when loosening the inj pipe but no flow when inj is connected !

While I agree that the injector will restrict the flow of fuel for testing purposes I would not go there yet.

Reasoning that there may be other things the OP has not verified yet. If he doesn't know how to remove the hood, does not know what the fuel filter is he needs someone onsite to help with this.

First off, as others have suggested, don't remove a fuel injector. It's unlikely that the injector pump failed while the tractor was parked.

That aside, the first thing you really should do is get an operator's manual if you don't already have one. That should describe the process for bleeding the fuel system, which you're going to need to do. Generally speaking, you open up a point downstream of the filter (or the outlet) and then pump on the primer which is part of the fuel lift pump...do that until there are no bubbles coming out, then seal the connection and secure the primer (think the 2640 has the push type that you rotate to secure).

The object you're asking about with the glass is a fuel filter, and the glass lets you see if there's water or sediment in the fuel. Try opening the bleed screw at the bottom to see if you get fuel out. Find the primer on the fuel lift pump and after you open the bleed screw on the filter, pump away until you get fuel out of the bleed screw. If you do, and it doesn't have bubbles...tighten the bleed screw, secure the primer on the fuel pump and see if it will start.
