Well, since purchasing my X748SE, I still find myself in desperate need of a bigger tractor.

Before any one says put a loader on the X748, it isn't going to work for me. I have to much work, and heavy work, that needs to be done for the X748 to do.

How do you 2x20 series owners like your tractors?

I am looking at buying a 2720 now, as it is all I can afford since my other purchase. I need that HP for bush hogging, which I will need to do about 3 acres, 3 times per year. The rest would be mainly loader work. Obviously I would love to step into a 3520, but with finances the way they are, I know now that won't happen. I am not one to settle for what I don't truly want, but when it comes down to having no tractor, or settling for a smaller machine, a 2720 looks like a dream right now.

Just looking for any user opinions to see how happy 2x20 owners are with there tractors.

Thanks all!

I have a 2520 with a RC2048 cutter. I mow about 5 acres twice a year. The 2520 is more than enough tractor to handle what I do but I wouldn't have wanted to go smaller. So far I haven't found anything I can't do that a bigger tractor can. It just may take longer.

Is the 2720 to small to handle a MX5 cutter? Just curious why you opted for the lighter duty model? I know you have the 2520 with lesser HP, but still. How is that cutter holding up?

The more I think about it, maybe a 3x20 is a waste. My main reason for wanting that was the 3rd function on the loader, I have a lot of stuff I could use a grapple for. I only have 5 acres of land though, and 1.5 of that is finish mowing. I only have about 2 acres that needs to be bush hogged. In the winter months we get nothing but rain, IF we get snow it is gone within hours or one day. Come winter time, the machine will sit for 4 to 5 months and only cost me money, I won't be using it much at all, so in that case, maybe a smaller machine is worth it.

I am a big guy, 6 ft 2 and 200 pounds, not sure the 2X20 has enough space in the open station for my big body.

I'm the same size as you and my 2320 fits perfectly. I'm always a little surprised how small it is when I'm off it because it feels like a full size tractor when operating.

My dealer recommended the 2048. I don't think the MX5 is listed as compatible with the 2520. I have been happy with the mower it seems to be holding up just fine. If you are concerned about the size of the cab I would make sure to sit in one before you commit.

Another option might be the 3032e. I looked at it when I bought the 2520. It is a nice tractor with plenty of power and a bigger frame.

I was thinking along the same lines, maybe a 3038E. I have just never been a fan of economy model tractors, they feel so plain jain and look so much worse than a twenty series machine. Although with the 2x20 series, you can't get a lot of features you can get with the 3x20 or 4x20 series, so maybe comparing the 2x20 to the 3032E/3038E, I am not missing much at all.

The 3032E/3038E are mechanical hydrostatic aren't they?

JDTank,

A 2720 is going to be infinitely more capable than your X748. Did you fully assess your needs prior to taking the initial plunge? Keep the X748 or trade? The X748 is a nice machine for mowing your 1.5 acres but for brush hogging or other serious work the larger 2X20's are extremely capable. I'd say overkill for only 1.5 acres of mowing though. Don't buy too large of a machine if it's going to replace the X748. Larger = less maneuverability.

Best regards,
Frank

You can find an LX5 that will run on the 2720. I love my 2520 and my 2210. I am not sure about the MX5, but at ~850 it is going to be a lot of weight back there on the 2x20 platform and at 5' back it is really going to rock your center of gravity to the back. When youj start pushing it you need to ask yourself the risk and rewards. If you only did it 2 times a year and it is mostly flat and you add enough front ballast I am sure you can get away with the MX5, but if I only did it a couple times a year I would look for an lx4 or lx5 or off brand. I don't think the risk of tip over and extra load W&T is worth it to runa big 5' a couple times a year; you couldn't make up enough time on 2 acres to gain from a 5' over a 4'....

I would think you would need to way your options in everything you plan to use the machine for, I had a 2320 with a 54D, 4ft woods Rot. Cutter, 5ft box and a 5ft scrape, it was/is a nice machine until I had the a serious problem with the 4x4 drive shaft broke off in the rear causing extensive damage to the front/rear John Deere did repair but I wanted to have something a little bigger for "tractor use" and a seperate lawn mower, after extensive research I found the match for me was a 3032E and D130 to cut the grass I also purchased the imatch system along with a 5ft Front. Rot. Cutter. With all that being said there are limitations to the 3032e and 3038e such as no mid mount PTO and front end attachments but this did not bother me and was a good fit for me yes the 3032E and 3038E are plain tractors with out the all the bells and whistles but at the end of the day do need the comforts. For me I did not need them and from all the feed back about 3E machines have been positive. Good luck I think both machines would be great but I do agree I think the 5ft Rot. Cutter will be a little much for 2720.

I definitely knew I would be buying a second tractor when I bought the X748, that was the plan actually. I wanted both machines to be diesel, and I just never could get over how much more machine the X700 series is over the X500 series. I was deterred from the X500 series because of gas engines with carbs, and dry electric clutches, plus the size. Our property is basically split in half, one half is the home side with the houses and garage, and the nice finish cut grass. I wanted a good, reliable, lightweight machine, but yet diesel, for pulling carts and cutting grass, that is what the X748 is for.

Now the other half is where a bigger machine is needed to move manure, wood chips we get delivered, create and maintain a long road, bush hog, and clean out some areas of brush so they can become useful areas of land for a garden. I always like to buy overkill, I originally wanted a 4520 machine, yes, that's right haha, but I knew I would have to compromise when I purchased the X748.

I am going to go to the dealer today or Tuesday (long weekend here) and sit on a 2x20 and 3x20 series, if I can live with the 2720, it's likely my best bet, given it won't be used for 5 months of the year, not much sense to step up to a bigger machine and tie up money in it that could be used elsewhere.
