John Deere 310D
Hello all!
Great forum here!
My father-in-law bought this back hoe and I work on it, not in it, on it. We got it home and it was definitely used.
Right now, we are trying to get it to move forward. It will move backwards and all of the hydraulics work fine. It just will not move forward at all. I can see the drive shaft trying to move, but it will not go forward at all.
This weekend I am going to try looking at the forward reverse solenoid, but without a wiring diagram, I am stuck. Now that I know what the wires are for (three wires and then two more) I can somewhat troubleshoot.
Any help would be great!

:welcome:
Get into jdparts and see if there are some schematics there that will help. One example of the wiring harness is attached.

Wow, I should have posted on here a long time ago. Thanks for all your help!

We have tried every which way the switches and gears go and still no movement forward. This weekend will be the definitive weekend on whether to call in the John Deere people ($$$). By this I mean I will be at the extend of my limited knowledge of working on heavy equipment.

Thanks again!

Pull the drain plug on the reverser. You will likely get metal and/or clutch material. If the fluid is clean then I would look for electrical issues.

OK, so I pulled off the solenoids and the block. The oil was very gray and smelled burnt. The flat o-rings look intact, but are probably in need of replacement. I have put out a call to a couple of junk yards for a used reverser.
I believe my problem lies further into the reverser, but I am not comfortable paying $1100.00 for a newer one because I will assume they don't make them anymore, they just rebuild them.
Thanks to all for your help!

Keep the ideas coming!

The last one I rebuilt took $800 in parts for the reverser to replace all of the seals and clutches plus another $900 for the torque converter. I charged 14 hours of labor for the R&R and rebuilding. With tax and freight the bill was about $3200. The John Deere dealer wanted $4500.

Brian

PS. If the oil is burnt, the clutches are burnt.

When I start the 310 D it will not move forward or reverse and the Stop light stays on. you rev it for a few minutes and the light goes off and it will move. I was told there is a small screen under a solenoid or magnetic valve on the top of the transmission that plugs.

Ask Curtis B. said, " there is a screen in the same block that houses the solenoid. It is under the Nut, next to the solenoid. Does this make sence to you. The person that sold it to me pointed at a solenoid and said about once a year they had to remove that and pull the little screen and clean it. any guidance?

what is involved in changing converter seal in 310D? The machine is in remote location and I need to find out if I can do it in fierld or do I have to bring it in? I have done it in Case 580 but don't know if I can just drob the housing? or the shuttle? trans?
