Howdy,

I'm currently slowly repairing a JD 316 that was "well loved" by the previous PO. A number of parts were broken (ignition switch, mower PTO engage switch, voltage regulator) and those have been resolved. For some reason, the "venturi" that is supposed to bolt on to the flywheel was missing. I picked one up on ebay but the bolt holes are MUCH larger than the threaded holes in the flywheel blades. I don't know if someone changed out the flywheel with a different one or what. If I use screws that match the threaded holes, the holes in the venturi are very loose.

Any idea what's going on?

I'm pretty sure the engine is the B43G, not the later P series. Would they have had different bolt sizes for the venturi?

The 316 had a B43E engine. I would center it as best you can, then install the flywheel shroud ( engine tin with the fuel pump on it ).
Make sure it is centered and there is no interference.
When they went from the G series to the P series there was a change with the flywheel and surrounding parts. This happened because the electronic ignition pickup is under the flywheel.

Do you know what year the tractor was made? Tractor Data shows two different engines based on when the tractor was made. See here:
TractorData.com John Deere 316 tractor engine information

It would help us help you if we had more info.

Serial number M00316X287559 which makes it the early version with the B43E engine unless someone changed it out. I found a picture of the flywheel with larger bolt holes, definitely different than what I have. I'll double-check the engine ID tag shortly.

I wonder if shoulder bolts would work?

Just checked. Well waddayaknow. The engine is a P218G. Does the 218 use a venturi at all? The tractor doesn't have power steering, so it's definitely a 316.

Looks like it just uses an intake screen...bought one off ebay.
