Just resealed the intake manifold put it back together and now runs great. After about 4 -5 minutes the engine shuts down like a switch was turned off. Wait 30 seconds to a minute and the dash light come on with a single click sound and the engine starts right up, runs for about the same time and shuts down. I replaced the 25 Amp circuit breaker and seemed to improve when the PTO running the mower deck is not engaged. I bypassed the new circuit breaker and this made no difference.
I measured the output voltage to the battery while running and am getting a solid 14.4 to 14.5 volts with or without the PTO engaged. This voltage does not drop before the engine shuts down. Been reading the forums and am about at the end of my wits. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Shuts down because of no spark, or shuts down because out of fuel?

Shuts down even if PTO is not engaged?

Fuel is not an issue, Changed the fuel filter and have good flow. I would assume it is a no spark condition since everything shuts down. No dash light, will not turn over etc. The battery voltage immediately after shut down is 13.4 volts. When the dash light comes back on I can restart the tractor and it runs for a while.

It shuts down with or with out the PTO engaged. The only difference is that it will run longer (twice as long) without the PTO on. Interestingly, last year while mowing or snow blowing, if I cycle the PTO, (turn it on and off) after a while it would not turn back on. I assumed that once it heated up there was an issue, so I just left the blower or mower on until the job was completed. The tractor never shut down.

This shutting down issue started after I removed and sealed the intake manifold (resulted in higher RPM's and running much better). I verified that I didn't have any shorted wires etc.

Thanks

Check the resistance of the pto coil, it should measure between 3.4 and 4.9 ohms.
Check and adjust the pto air gap, should be 0.018".

Thanks I'll check that tonight.

Just to clear up something for me, are you saying that when the engine quits, that the starter doesn't work also?

That is correct. The starter will not operate until the dash light comes back on. That is one reason I suspected the Breaker. Since I cannot locate a wiring diagram for my 316 of the same era I am unable to troubleshoot much further. Looking at the parts list it may or may not be the Time delay control module. Green Parts Store want $245.07 for one and I would rather not just throw that in until I know what this module does and if it can cause this type of failure.

The other thing I forgot to mention is that the Neutral safety switch came loose and I now have it taped closed. Yes it will start in any position now, that may or may not contribute to the issue. I also replaced the Voltage regulator.

Thanks

Sounds like something is causing a large current draw which is enough to eventually trip the circuit breaker.
Here's a link to a couple of electrical schematics which may be helpful, you may have to register to view which I recommend.

Thanks, although the diagrams were for the newer P21G engine, they appear to be similar enough to give me some insight into the Delay Module. I am defiantly suspecting that module now.. I will verify the signals going into it and go from there.
