It is a relay and relay socket, usually mounted down near the starter. It removes putting a high current demand on the ignition key switch when the starter solenoid is engaged. The high current burns or pits the internal contact of the switch, after a while the switch builds a high resistance and doesn't provide enough current the engage the solenoid.
