John Deere 345 Time Delay module

Re: John Deere 345 Time Delay module, Can it be bypassed (jumped)?

One thing you could try, if the engine starts and runs on one cylinder, can you take the spark plug wire off and hold it near the engine to see if there is spark.

Is it always the same cylinder that sometimes dose not fire?

Look at the service manual. There are some trouble shooting help in there plus the specs for the pulser coils and the igniter that your can check with a ohm meter.

My guess would be some sort of intermittent electrical connection. Check all the connectors. Separate the connectors and check for pins/terminals that have pushed back. Also look for corrosion on the terminals and wires, especially the ground points.

I do have it. I did find the section for the Ignitor module and it does give the Ohm readings but not sure where to ground it. On the machine or can I remove it and use any ground? I am not overly knowledgeable on electric.

Thank you

Do you have a good volt/ohm meter?

Seeing as these measurements are relatively low resistance, you need to set your meter to the lowest ohm setting. Some meters have an auto-scaling. Connect your meter leads together and note the reading. If it is not zero, you will have to subtract the number from the reading you get when connected to the connector terminals.

Go to page 116 of the manual and test the pulser for resistance as noted. You will have to unplug the pulser connector to make these measurements.

Next go to page 117 and make measurements of the igniter. In the chart, the laying down 8 represent infinity, i.e. no connection or open.

If you are still having trouble understanding what to do, do you have a friend at work or neighbor who can help you?

I will try all you mentioned and go from there. I'll keep you posted. Thank you!

Thank you all for the suggestions. Even though it was the expensive part, I really didn't want to get into tearing the engine apart before I tried everything else. It ended up being the Ignitor box. I have an early model and it did not have the $20 ignition module. Found a great deal in this on EBAY and it is an OEM part. $197.00 with including shipping.
Thank again for all the help,

Gene

Hum, $197 for a electronic module is a good deal? Must have a lot of gold plating.

I'm glad you got it going.

I understand what you are talking about BUT if you get on line and look up the "Ignitor Module" for a John Deere 345, you will find they range from $225 to $268. The higher is from the Deere dealer. On thing I ahve learned is that when it comes to certain things, buy ONLY OEM Deere parts. Like this and especially O ring seals for hydraulic pistons. You can find them from different places cheaper BUT get DEERE seals.

Take care and thanks again!
