John Deere 350 mower PTO Shaft

Hello, i just recently picked up a John Deere 350 sickle mower 9 ft bar. I only got half of the PTO shaft with it and for the price i got it i was ok with that. Here is my problem, I took the PTO Shaft off the Mower and it is 21 Spline at the mower end, Easy enough i figured, so i bought an adapter from local box store to go from 1 3/8 21 spline female to 1 3/8 6 spline male. I went to put the adapter on the mower and it is too big. Anyone know the exact size of the 21 spline I am thinking maybe 1 1/8. just trying to confirm before my adventure begins to find an adapter. also, the reason i am trying to adapt to a 6 spline is i already have another pto shaft that i can use on it if i can get it adapted. If not i am going to build the other half of the original shaft, at an expense of course. thanks to anyone who can help.

Rather than get an adapter can you remove that end from the original shaft - perhaps at the U joint? You may be able to put that end onto a "normal" drive shaft whose other end is the more common six spline female to connect to your tractor. I don't know what you have for resources but out here we have an outfit called Six States Distributing. They do all kinds of stuff for agricultural and semi truck drive lines.

That is my original plan, i was just out in store today and was trying to go a cheaper lazier route. thats is what i mean by rebuild the shaft. thank you

JD 350 mower had a serial # beak for drive shaft. Can you please post photos of pto splined pto shaft & drive shaft? If it was my mower I'd concentrate on getting just the tractor 1/2 of shaft that's AWOL. Which shaft in photo below resembles your shaft? Also shown below is the only 350 mower spline diameter I can find on JD parts.

the center picture with the square shaft is what i have. I did order a 1 3/16 shaft today with the yoke welded on to it and the cross bearing and the tractor 6 spline end based on my best measurements. The picture with the diameters and things really helped me to determine what i needed. again thank you a bunch.

By the way i was able to get the parts at my local NAPA Auto Parts, they were in their ballcamp catalog and should be here in a few days. i also ordered an operators manual from the net and should get it soon too. Again thank you.
