Tractor
John Deere 4100
My father has had this John Deere 4100 for several years now. He bought it mainly for all the mowing he does (about 5 acres). My parents have decided to move to a smaller place that requires less work to maintain, and my father offered to give me his tractor if I can use it. My wife and I have a little "Hobby Farm" and have been thinking about getting a small tractor.....but I'm not sure if this 4100 will be too small for what we want to do. Without a front end loader to weight the front end down, would this tractor be able to lift a round bale? What size brushhog could it handle?

I really don't know much about this tractor....hoping some of you guys could give me some info. If my father gives it to me, I would feel obligated to keep it..not sell it. So if it's too small more most jobs, I would rather just not take it at all. I think its around 20hp, and has around 600 hours on it. I'd love to get a loader for it, but from what I've heard......unless you get them with the tractor when you buy them, they are crazy expensive.

Yeah that's pretty undersized for what you described you would be using a tractor for. I would just keep it and use it to mow around your place (hey it's a free tractor and it's been used to mow anyways). That's pretty low hours for that machine too. I wouldn't add a loader or anything to it, I'd honestly get another larger tractor to do everything you need to do around your place for farming chores.

It's too small for moving round bales, unless they're very light. Rollingsfarms is 100% right, though: get it and keep it. If I had it on my farm, I'd use the snot out of it just like it is in the picture. Having one tractor is never ideal. Two is much better. If you have a small handy machine like that, you are free to get a heavier, less nimble, less friendly-to-the-lawn tractor to do the other tasks you mentioned. To me this is a no-brainer. Accept this lovely gift from your father.

I responded to you on AR.com.

You can move small round bales on the 3 point hitch, and a loader for that tractor is about $5K. If you dont need to move large round bales, and the tractor is free, why not buy a loader for it and have one machine that will do everything.

Well, I suppose it depends on the other tasks the OP would like to tackle, but at least at my place, no one tractor will "do everything". Even if it did, what happens when you get it stuck?

Personally, I'd take the 5,000 and put it towards a larger hydrostatic or maybe hydraulic shuttle tractor that already has a loader, and keep that Deere the way it is, but that's me.

I wont disagree, but when faced with a *free* tractor, I'm sure you could make some compromises.

Also, you'll have a hard time finding a larger loader tractor for anywhere *near* $5K that isnt a clapped out POS.

You will find all kinds of uses for it, even at that size. I cut 8' tall brush with a 4' brush hog behind a 15hp Shibaura. If you get a 4' tiller, a 4' box blade, and maybe a 5' rear blade, you can do a lot. It you need to move large round bales, buy a cheap (old) farm tractor with a loader. You will use this 4100 plenty.
