Posting an issue for a buddy. He has a JD 4200 Hydrostat trans. He says he was working on the driveway and put it in High range "C' to get to the end of the drive, and when he tried to go back to B and A range, it wouldn't go there. He could get into Neutral and C, but it wouldn't go into B or A range. He said linkages look ok and he didn't hit anything.
It sat a few days and I asked him to go out and try it now, maybe something built up pressure and wouldn't allow the lower ranges, but he said it was still doing the same thing.

Ideas?

If it were me, I'd put it in neutral and pull it with a truck or something for a few feet to see if that magically releases something.

may have no effect, but it's worth a shot.

will have to have the engine running I assume since it's an hst

Post in John Deere owning and operating. Better chance of a good hit.

Not knowing how the friend is trying to get it in the B and A range, can't offer any help. I know it helps to nudge the forward or reverse pedal a little bit to get the range gears moving some.

Yep, I told him to move the pedals a little each to ensure they weren't preventing the change of Range. But he said he can go to neutral and C and back and forth easily. I'll post there - Thx

I have had them all away apart. Hydro and sync shift.
The range selector is just a gear drive, 3 different rear end gear speeds.
Totally different from the Hydro. two different systems.
Check the rear sight glass for hydro fluid. Both use the same fluid. If it is low and the range shift fork
dried up it might be sticking.
Sorry for the problems

Ok, issue is solved.
I talked to my buddy today and he said the Hydraulic fluid was low. He said "I check it all the time (it has a sight window) and I don't know where it all went....SMH
Thanks for all the help and replies.

Tell him to get some red dye. A lot easier to see.
