I'm thinking seriously about buying a JD 425. The older version, not the zero turn. My main reason would be for the shaft drive, so I could add a small box blade, or even better, a combination box/dozer blade. I just need something light for around the house, dragging the driveway and spreading gravel, and also spreading a couple dump truck loads of topsoil. Will a 425 do what I need, or should I go back to the drawing board?

Any thoughts about the front end loader attachment?

Thanks in advance.

I recommend you rent a piece of equipment to spread the topsoil rather than buy a 425 for this purpose, it is too light and too minimal of a tractor to make economic sense. I use my x749 for touch up work and tilling small yards I can assure you it knows when a boxblade is back there.
