Hello, I have a John Deere 425. It has treated me very well for 20 + years now and over the last year or so I have noticed that the transmission slips when I transition from forward to reverse and back. The slipping gets much worse when the mower is running.
Any ideas or comments are greatly appreciated
Thank you

Pleas tell us what maintenance you have done so far, in the last couple of years.

Yes, especially if transmission fluid and filter have been changed.. need a place to start.

What is the serial number? (xx out for the last couple digits if you'd like).

Hi ok.
I replaced the plastic internal gear more than 15 years ago. I have resealed the plastic valve covers several times over the years still leaking again of course. Replaced the fuel pump about 10 years ago. Replaced the fan belt, replace a leaky hydraulic line, I had the dealer fix a differential lock seal leak about 10 years ago.
Shortly after getting the differential leak fixed another leak popped up just above the transaxle filter. Hoping that this is another common leak that's easy to fix. I believe that is all the work ever done. it has about 2,000 hours I am the original owner I purchased the snow blower and 48 in mower deck when I originally purchased the tractor then purchase the loader a few years later. Outside of the transaxle leak and a little bit of slippage the tractor runs perfect the slippage is minimal now that I am not using the mower or PTO but it will come back when I start using the snowblower. I am planning on finally fixing the transaxle leak and would like to fix the slippage at the same time and anything else you may recommend. I have the JD workshop manual as well
Thank you very much.

Yes all fluids meticulously maintained

When you say slippage can you describe it in more detail, since this is foot pedal controlled (separate pedals). I wondering about the pedal mount (bushings being dry or corrosion), linkages to the pedals needing adjustment.

Anything is possible but it feels like an under pressure problem to me after starting up the PTO during the first few times of going forward and reverse when I push the pedal in reverse it doesn't do anything at first then it catches I get a jerking motion when it first catches. This can happen a few times until everything is fully warmed up then it stops
The serial number is placed somewhere on the tractor is that right? Maybe somewhere on the frame? can't remember
Thank you

There should be a sticker on the frame behind the right front tire.

Some of your story is not adding up... like you have the service tech manual (assumed that is what you call the JD workshop manual) yet you don't know where the serial number is located ??
Bought it new, or acquired used?

What in the trouble shooting section of the manual have you gone through, and what have you found?

We would like to help..

There is a "free wheeling" lever to dis-engage the tranny. Is it possible this is part of the problem?

Really, why would I be lying? Original owner. Based on your responce this problem doesn't appear to be a common one. OK. I will go though the manual's diagnostics guide and see what it comes up with.
