now that's an idea... I'm sure I can come up with something like that, best of both, thanks for the idea! Also, what I know about hydraulics comes from being so poor we had to fix our own tractors, bailers, loaders or anything else that broke. I'm sure no one else out there has that problem 
Splitting large logs vertically is the best, but once the chunks are easy to pick up, 50 lbs or less, I prefer to run it horizontally. It has a log cradle so they just lay there and fall off each side once split. It's much easier to split a 6" diameter log in half on the horizontal than bending over and holding it in place vertically.
We have a stove not a fireplace so I tend to split everything much smaller so I can meter the load better. We use large logs overnight. If I throw too much wood mass in during the day I have to choke it off or the heat output is way too much most of the winter. If you are curious, we have a Lopi Liberty stove.
