I just bought a used JD 455 from a dealer. It is a 1995 with 315 hours on it. I do not know the person that owned it but was told by the dealer he had less then a acre of ground and wanted to move up to a 2210 and that was the only reason for getting rid of the 455. It looks like it was well taken care of, the machine looks just like new.

When I start it up there is a big puff of black smoke out of the exhaust. While running I can put my glove by the exhaust and pick up a slight hint of black soot on my glove but exhaust looks ok I can not realty see anything. I do not get this with my JD 4115 but that only has 30 hours on it.

Is this normal to have black smoke and to be able to pick up soot on a glove too? I do not have much experience with diesel engines. The dealer says it is normal with the 455.

Mine will do that if it idles a lot. When you throttle up to mow it will blow the soot out & run clean. I use mine year around for moving things, mobile work bench, a series of cat 0 implements to maintain landscaping etc. Keep the oils & filter maintained & it will deliver lower operating expenses than any gas mower!

It's perfectly normal. Mine does the same thing.
