John Deere 5045/5055 e or d Questions

Looking at buying a JD 5055d, but have a question that owners of the 5045d, 5045e, 5055d and 5055e owners might be able to help with.

The independent PTO, is it all on/off or can you feather it on?

The brochures speak to front axle height, but what is the ground clearance do these tractors? I'm asking because at some point I'd be using it to make round bales and in doing so, straddle the windrow vs going along side it like I do with my New Holland square baler, so found clearance is important.

The turbo 3029 engine, any troubles with it - otherwise any inherent problems I should be concerned about prior to purchase one of these tractors?

If you idle the engine then move the PTO control lever forward slowly you can ease A cutter or other piece of equipment into motion like you let out a clutch on a car.
The 5045E has 13 inches of clearance under the front axle drain plug and the rear draw bar plate and everything else including the 4WD drive shaft has that or more. That might vary a bit with tire size on a 5055E but that is what my 5045E has with 13.6 x 28 R1s on it. I have no engine troubles so far but only have 332 hours on it so it better be that way for a long time ahead. It is pretty old technology and I think they have all the bugs worked out of it. Check your radiator hose clamps frequently during the first 100 hours as they tend to leak until they get a set to them.

One more question - does the engine have a charge air cooler (inter cooler) in addition to the radiator? It looks like in the brochure it does, but that could be for one of the higher hp models in the 5 series. The cooler would be stacked in front of the radiator.

Nope. There is a can type double filter dust collector that is mounted in front of the radiator and over the battery and from that a three inch or so rubber air pipe runs back to the air preheater on it's way to the turbo. The preheater is a starting aid and works well.

I have a 2000 JD 4200 with FEL and a 2012 5055D. I have ran a 10 foot bush hog with the 5055 and constantly run a 6 foot now my rows of pine trees are planted to keep up 55 acres of planted area. Had a couple of initial problems from coolant clamp leaks to one oring on a steering control box that was not tightens well at the factor. I fixed the first and an immediate in field fix for the later from JD. I love the 5055D tractor. I feel it is the best buy per HP, size and weight out there. I have added 1,000 lbs to the front of mine, a canopy and a front grill guard.

I have a 5055E and really like the machine. It is built pretty solid and has plenty of power. The complaints I have is I feel that Deere dropped the ball on QA. I have had several coolant hose leaks, a muffler clamp leak, chain from fuel cap was not attached, I had shifter boot replaced and the other needs replaced, hood was not aligned properly, front tire was low from dealer when I bought it and have had to put air in it twice, and now occasionally the idle will raise a couple hundred rpms. I also had to have the instrument cluster replaced because it fogs up and if I remember correctly it still does. Also had fuel sender replaced because the gauge came up slow and still does. Also, I don't know if anyone here has noticed but take a look at the fuel hoses. My hoses have a couple cracks in them but I saw one on the dealer lot the other day that looked like a 50 year old tire with major cracks. Dealer has been good and addressed all my issues I have asked about. I fixed some of the smaller stuff myself like tire, fuel cap, and hood alignment. I feel that allot of these issues never should have happened. I give the tractor a thumbs up and the QA a two thumbs down. I hope they have addressed all these issues since I purchased mine. I have read some people had hydraulic issues where it was getting so hot to melt fuel tank.

They're good tractors. I owned a 5203(same as a 5055) and really considered buying a 5045d here recently but ended up finding another tractor I wanted and got a good deal on. Could have got a great deal on a rental return 5045d but it was over my budget I'd set for myself.

I have also had to replace a shifter boot that was rotting when I got the tractor in Dec 2012. After replacing I slathered both boots down with dielectric grease and I have had no problems since but I does attract a nice dust film on the boots but if it keeps it from cracking that is OK. So far I agree with your QA comment but luckily it is the little stuff that has got me except for the oring on the steering control box under the dash, that was a fairly big deal to get to. I do wish range B to reverse was synchronized. That would have been nice when I bush hog and mow in B1 and need to reverse often. Again for the money spent a very strong tractor. Compared to my plastic 4200 the thick metal 5055D fenders are very nice to have. I love the hand rail to get up on the tractor with and the spring seat takes the bumps out of the pasture.

I replaced one shifter boot also. Dealer covered the part.
