One of the two bolts that attach the seat track mechanism to the body of my John Deer 5075E just sheared off. I haven't taken it apart yet but from the look of it this is a hefty screw easily with an 3/8 inch thread. The seat has 2 screws into the tractor body front and back that hold the non-moving bottom portion of the track for adjusting seat position. When I noticed the seat was swiveling around I looked underneath and it appears like there is the remains of a very large screw in the body below the hole in the mechanism that was obviously bolted down.

I can't imagine how such a large screw could have failed in this situation. So my first question is am I correct in believing that's how the seat is attached? In any case given that I do not have a machine shop handy, does anyone have some advice on how to repair it? I've considered glue :-(

Things break; may have been defective to begin with.

Take the good bolt off and take it to the store to get a matching new one and you should be good to go.

Very clever replies so far. Perhaps I was not clear enough. When I say the screw sheared off, what I mean is that the head and whatever part of the threaded portion that was not screwed into the tractor body was cut off. The part that was screwed into the body remains. The problem is getting it out. I've not had a lot of luck with those screw extractor things. I was hoping someone with knowledge might know if the screw can be accessed from inside if it goes through the body part under the seat.

Weld a nut on to it

Take the good bolt out. If you can see to the ground through the hole that you just took the bolt out of, then that indicates you can access the bolt from underneath. If so, then just use pliers to grab the broken bolt from under to screw it in the rest of the way so that it falls out the bottom.

Sorry that happened to you. The official JD position will be that you got the E, but we will be happy to upgrade you to an R...for a price. :)

I think I would just source a replacement screw. Could have must had a bad screw. If another one breaks, there's likely a design or assembly flaw.

Just drill a hole in it and hammer an extractor in the hole. Penetration oil, penetration oil. Ease it out. I just pulled a broke starter bolt off one of my trucks. Was not bad at all.

If it's a thru bolt that sheared then just run a 1/4 dia drill down thru it and it will likely run itself out the bottom.
Bolt came from China and that's all there is to know about that.

Perhaps you could supply us with a couple of pictures so we may have a better understanding of what happened and how to remedy it?
