Ok, so I found this 5083e a while back and have been pondering on it quite a bit lately. They say that the housing is broken as shown in the picture and the windshield is broken, other than that the tractor looks fine to me. I realize there can be problems with the "guts" of it. What I'm wondering is if you could just weld the housing back and add some structural support around it. I tried to find out how much a new housing would cost, as I could get one and use it as a summer project learning curve. I would not be doing this by myself, I have a mechanic down the road that knows what he is doing beyond belief and I would try and get his help and do it in his shop and of course pay him. If I could do this at a reasonable price I may get it, fix it, and either sell it or keep it just as a secondary big tractor. You can never have to many tractors. If there are any thoughts or if you find out what part number the housing is, it would be a great help.

I can't tell for sure which direction the picture was taken from. Is this the clutch housing($3,100) we are seeing broke or the transmission case ($2,300)? Prices is for Deere powered versions.

I think it is from the left side looking from the front towards the back right of the tractor if you were looking at it from the front of the machine. It says the housing under the cab is broken and if you look closely there are a couple of gears that aren't connect, so looks likes thats some more money too. The bottom one is just under halfway up the picture on the right break and the other is about a third of the way down on the left break. Thanks for the prices.

I would say it's a big gamble, but if you can get it at a very good price may be worth it. What is the cause of the damage?

I think it was just rolled, he wants 20k, and its got hardly any hours on it. Considering its probably a $40k tractor, it could be a pretty good deal, I might offer him $18,500-$19k

Some of those parts prices are breathtaking and you always need more than you think . You can look them up yourself on the JD website.

Yeah, I know. Dad has one and broke the door off and that alone cost $400. I may drive up and look at it but its still a lot of money for a tractor that doesn't move

The tires look like it's got well over a 1000 hrs on it. Later

So it rolled and that busted the trans housing open? I can't tell very good in the pic but would expect more damage to the cab in a roll.

I think a new 5085e is around 42-44k. Assuming 1000 hours I would price the 5083e more in the 35k range. I could see 10k being spent for repairs.

I just had to add some more comments. They got the chain holding it together. There is a return tube that is split in two. Other items are ripped apart there. This thing was way apart and I mean way apart and twisted and they come-a-longed it back together as best they could. Parts are jammed in there now. I wonder if some of the misc. parts gears etc. fell out when it split apart. Next they made a hospital move back to home maybe on a trailer but I doubt it. They probably did more damage internally getting back together and back home than the accident caused. There are some major gears and shafts plus the cracked housing that will needed replaced. Then you have the cab work, windshield, doors fit up etc. If this tractor has been setting outside getting wet then all of those pricey electronics in the dash are suspect. This looks like a money pit. It would be one of those things that you would keep fixing forever. Later

It's worth it's weight in scrap. For 20,000 you can get a nicer older tractor with hours that would cost you less to fix up than this, that tractor is junk and worth scrap / salvage value only.

Tractors like this and better you can find all day long for around 20,000

If I was to buy it I would offer some where around 5 to 7k. But I would put together a real parts list using the JD web site and get their pricing. In this estimate include all new hardware, shims, fluids, there maybe a harness involved, gears shafts bearing, housing, windshield glue for windshield etc. Do a rough estimate of the labor hours. Then you will have some info to bargain with. Some other info. You will need to pull the cab off to do the repairs. There is a lot of labor involved in this repair. To me that 20k number is way out of line. He is fishing. That is the reason it has been sitting. He may have already got the insurance money and he is seeing if he can better his deal by not fixing it and selling it out right. Last question, does the engine run? That's it no more. Later.

It only has 354 hours on it. That is the only thing I can think of, for it to twist it like that. I wasn't really planning on doing anything, just kind of toying at it and wanted to get some more input that I was going crazy. Haha. If he'd sell it to me for oldtimer 66 price, I think it would work out. I don't think it came completely apart to where it was held together with a come along, but then also, all the wires and tubes there have been torn apart, or bent. It would probably be cheaper to get a new one. Plus I already have one with a loader, so I why put money into that when I can put that into other toys.

Maybe that tractor was driven hard into a ditch like in a culvert on the side of the road? That would twist it like that and not necessarily damage the cab or front end. Maybe stolen by kids for joyride? Maybe the engine ran for a while and the bearings were starved for oil?

I bet he would jump on that kind of offer. I would not pay 1/2 of that. I'll bet 20K in repairs if you are paying to have it done. Just parts will add up FAST

Run Forrest Run. I wouldn't touch that tractor with a 10 foot pole.

Run, run. If you want a project offer no more than 5k then disassemble for parts and sell the good parts and scrap the rest.

I would imagine an inusrance check has been written to someone, I wouldn't be ashamed to try to lowball it first by a lot, you never know.

Yep it's worth about 10 cents a pound.
