John Deere 5103
I have a 2004 John Deere 5103, it's a 50hp tractor and I was seeing anyone and everyone's opinion on running a John Deere 609 rotary cutter behind it, which is a 6' heavy duty. I have recently acquired the cutter but have had the tractor for a while running a mid-duty 5' rotary cutter. As I cut with the JD 609 I can notice when I hit thick spots in grass as opposed to not feeling much different with the 5'. It is not a drastic difference but in some cases where the grass was super thick it would drop about 100 rpms (2200 to 2100 rpms) but if I have the rpms at 2300 it cuts a lot better.
So here is my question:
- is a JD 5103 strong enough to use the JD609 without putting it under too much strain?

You've got the power to run that cutter and a big enough tractor to handle the weight. I don't see a problem.

I've operated a JD 709 on a JD 2040(40 hp) & a Kubota M4900(45 hp) so you should be "good to go"

It all has to do with proper speed for the conditions . I run a 6 ft heavy duty bush hog and have to slow down at times when running into some heavy hay with over 50 pto hp. it is no big deal to so . You should have no problem .

The power drop could be caused by a difference in the condition of the two different mowers cutting blade edges. The tractor itself is plenty big enough.
