I have been looking at moving up in tractor size. I now have a 4400. I started looking at 4610 & 4710s. Adealer suggested a 5205. I have not seen one as dealers in this area do not have them in stock. From the specs the 5205 looks like alot more tractor than the compacts & it costs less. So far the only thing do not like is they do not have a hydro option. Anyone else have experence with the 5205 & 521 loader.

Talk to John Miller III. He has a 5205. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

It is a lot of tractor for the $$$$$. I have heard they are a great seller for utility company's and highway departments for mowing ditches, as well as a good FEL tractor. Are they only 2wd?

5205s come in both 2WD and 4WD. The 8x4 tranny is unique with a synchro shift from foward to reverse between A range and reverse in any of the 4 gears. No reverse in B range.

Thanks for the replys John. While comparing the 4710/460 & 5205MFWD/521 from what I can tell is that the loader lifting capacity of the 4710/460 is 231 lbs more than the 5205MFWD/521.
Is this correct?
What size cutter is on your tractor.
What do you believe the advantages of the 5205 over the 4710?
Now for price help. Quote I got. 5205 MFD, 521, 73" bucket, R4, Mid DSCV, Rear SCV, $23,900.00.

Depends on what you are going to routinely do with the tractor. I have a 4700/hydro/MFWD. It's great for lots of loader work, easy to manuver. It's not an ag tractor though. The 5205 is built more for steady, heavy ag work. Great for bushogging, discing fields, etc. I believe the frame of the 5205 is stouter. The 4700 is OK for limited ag, but it doesn't have the low rpm torque and it can overheat with steady discing in hot weather. We'll probably end up with three tractors in the next few years (keeping the 4700). A larger one for haying/field work (70 to 100 hp) and a smaller one (25 to 35 hp) for my wife's mucking the barn, etc.

Chevy...

Another thing you might want to consider is the intended uses for your new tractor. Prior to purchasing my 4710, I was considering one of the 5320/5420 machines. The disadvantage of these latter machines are they have bigger chasis, wheel base, etc. They're just bigger and wider machines. In my case, I needed a tractor that would negotiate tight, narrow logging paths through a couple woodlots I have. I also needed a tractor for miscellaneous bush hogging and loader work. Also, something to consider is storage. The 4710 came with foldable ROPS as an option....not sure the 5205 or the bigger 5000 series tractors have the same option. If your barn or garage opening is standard size, it may be problematic storing the larger tractor without the foldable ROPS.

I felt the 4710 was a good compromise. I sacrificed a little on engine and PTO HP and torque but yet felt I could still adequately handle the intended uses I had for the tractor. The 4710, while smaller and lacking a little bit of oomph that the 5205 may have, is still quite a dynamo. 3PH lift capacity is about 2,500lbs and FEL loader capacity is extremely adequate for most jobs anyone will want to do with a utility tractor.

I'd suggest identifying all your intended uses for the tractor you want, operational needs and considerations, storage and the like, and plan accordingly. Price should be a secondary consideration. I recall a TBN member in one of these threads last year who purchased a 5000 series tractor because he got a good price on it but after one week asked the dealer to take it back because it was too big for the jobs he had. Dealer was gracious enough to take it back and sell him the 4700 that he really needed.

So, after you've identified and come to grips with all of the aforementioned considerations, then negotiate the best price you can on the tractor THAT CAN SERVE YOUR NEEDS. Best of luck to you in your tractor selection. Let us know what you decide.....

I ordered a 4710/460 & MX6 today. I liked the smaller size of the 4710 & the hydro. I did look at 2 used 4700/460's before I decided on the 4710. One was a 2001 model with 191 hours. The upside was that it was like new. The downside was that it had no warranty & was priced only $2,000 below the 4710.
The other 4700 was a 2000 model with 183 hours. The upside was that it was priced $5,000 less than the 4710. The downside was that it had no warranty, looked like it had been used hard & had the old design front axle. Having not heard anything about scuffing problems on the 4500 - 4700. I did A range donuts in the dealers gravel lot with the 4700 & a 4610. The 4700 outside front wheel left deep ruts. The 4610 never left a mark. If this 4700 would have had the new design axle I would have bought it.
Believe it or not it was my wife that decided I should get the 4710 & stop looking at used ones /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

Congratulations on your new 4710.

I would be interested in knowing what the dealer quoted you on the 4710 (less the MX6), especially considering he quoted $23.9K for the 5205.

Thanks,

Froggy

Excellent choice. You'll enjoy it. I'm surprised the dealer wanted so much for the older used models. I got a much better deal and had 2/3 rds of the warrenty left when I bought mine. Different dealers I guess.
