john deere 5720
My steering requires more effort than it used to, and this happened over a 2 hour period. John deere dealer has done extensive testing and told me that the orbital steering unit needed to be replaced. I replaced it under there advice with no improvement. I have also kitted the priority valve finding nothing visibly wrong. have pulled one hose off the steering cylinder and checked for bypass. Does not matter weather at idle or revs the steering is tight. nearly like a phantom pressure is causing this issue to the steering unit. Is there a 5720 expert out there as I am tearing my hair out and have spent $3500 au to date. Don,t believe there is an issue with the return oil via brake master cylinder. This machine has only done 2000 hrs and has been very well looked after.

Welcome to TBN
I presume you have been regularly greasing the frt axle pivot points. Have you or your dealer checked steering pump pressure?

Pivots good well maintained machine one pump does everything john deere have done $2500 labour just in testing. Am looking for a 5720 expert overseas that knows them backwords.

I am not familiar with the 5720 but could you answer a couple of questions.

1) does the steering feel change if you operate another function? I.e. lift the three point, operate one of the rear remotes to build pressure
2) Does the effort required to turn the steering wheel change while turning it slowly vs more rapidly?

All functions work well. Steering is now heavy on the odd occasion it improves slightly for a couple of seconds but not good. Using the 3 point linkage does not change this. Have dead headed a remote while steering and nothing changes. Low revs high revs hot or cold is exactly the same. I kitted the load sensing and priority valves which is basically springs, there are no o rings that are important to operation. Sometimes turning the wheel rapidly is slightly easier than slowly. You only have to turn the wheel very slowly and it is tight. The valves I kitted I thoroughly inspected but am suspect there is something going on I can't see. I engaged the dealer for tech support but has cost me nothing but money. am worried I won't have this sorted now till after Christmas and I am already two weeks behind with work. I am asking for help overseas where there might be more of these around. I just can't keep replacing parts at my expense for nothing which is what the dealer wants.

Fred,
When you kitted the priority valve did you remove all the sliding spools to confirm they moved smoothly in the mating bore? In looking at the on-line parts breakdown I believe there is at least one possibly more orifices in the spools. Did you carefully inspect all of the orifices in the valve to make sure that one was not partially plugged?

Reason asking is that everything you are describing sounds like the steering unit is being starved of oil. Not sure what your dealer performed for tests but if you have the capabilities I would suggest installing a pressure gauge in the pressure line to the steering unit so that you can watch this pressure while steering. Not sure if Deere put test points in this area or not.

Yes and have rechecked the spools. I agree about oil, am going to get my own test fittings even though john deere have tested every thing. Am concerned there is something wrong I can't see. There is a piston and spring between the sandwich which was replaced in the kit . The old piston had slight signs of wear but still moved freely. I don't know exacly what role this part does. I still think the problem is there but still living in hope that a jd expert might see my post.

Do you have the hydraulic schematic for your tractor? I am curious to see if the priority valve is an on demand type or continuous flow style.

On demand provides flow as needed to the steering circuit

Continuous flow provides a constant flow to the steering.

Like you say hopefully a Deere expert will see this

No schematics are a secret. Has got load sensing port on the orbital unit.
