My dad is looking for a Garden tractor and found a JD 650 fro $5,000. Has around 700 hours (garage keep) and is in very good condition. Haven't had a chance to inspect it yet but was wondering if the price was about right. 4x4 and everything works (per owner). It comes with Land Pride finishing mower that looks to be in good condition. Is the $5,000 price decent and what to look for when inspecting this particular model? thanks!

Pretty old machine...last year of manufacture was 1988 or thereabouts.
Since it's MFWD, it'll have power steering. That's a plus.
No loader though (at least you didn't mention one)...that's a minus.
However, since your dad was looking for a garden tractor, he may not care about not having a loader.
The 650 has about 15 PTO HP, which isn't bad. He could probably use a 48" tiller.
I'm guessing the finishing mower is a 48" unit. That 15 PTO HP will do well with that. You will probably need front ballast (suitcase weights or equivalent) if he wants to raise the mower for transport.

That said...$5K is, to me, high...even with only 700 hours. If your father likes it, I suggest he have $4K in hand when you go look at it.

Good luck!

It does have the suitcase weights and no need for the FEL but he will be looking for a tiller. He's 78 and the push behind is getting to be to much for him. Not sure how much the Land Pride mower adds to the price.

Not all MFWD 650's have power steering, it was an option. I sold mine about 5 years ago for $8000. It had a loader, no power steering, was in excellent condition, and had about 350 hours on it. It is a great little tractor, they are getting old, but most parts are still available from JD. I would say $5000 is in the ballpark, but you could always offer less.
Good luck,
Ken

I've been watching 650's for a while ( at least a year) and that's a fairly average price. I wouldn't pay more than that, but I haven't seen any less than $4K either unless they are really rough.

If you are just using it to mow lawn, you could go look for a 2WD which you can find newer tractors for good prices.

It will be used both for cutting lawn and in the garden. Owner said he purchased it new in 1989 but will check the serial# for verification. It has power steering and original tires that are in great shape. Don't know the gears yet and I think the finish mower is 48".
