John Deere 655 diesel, hard to work on?

Hi to all and Merry Christmas. In my free time I enjoy tinkering with tractors mostly, and more than anything I like to buy ones which are rough and give them another shot at life. I came across this 655, which doesent look terrible, but is rough. Says it doesent run, just wanted to get some opinions. How hard are diesels to work on? Im great with small gasoline motors, but just dont have much experience with diesels, except driving them. Thanks Blake

They can be more expensive to repair, as an example say a gas engine needs the carb rebuilt -it may cost a few bucks for a kit and a little time and you are back in business,
Now say the diesel has a bad injection pump, that could easily cost $700
but other than the fuel system diesels are no more complicated.

diesels are really pretty simple on big thing to learn is not to remove the injection pump unless you know how, they are timed and to time it it must lock on a high lobe, I would not put a lot of money in that its 2 wheel drive and no loader, but try to get it to run and learn

Hi, thanks for the replys. The guy wants 1500, which I think is a little steep, just based on condition. Would really like to have this to work on though, what would be a reasonable price? Thanks

1500 is pretty steep, might have more underlying problems looks kinda ruff.

Maybe $500 since you have no idea why it won't run. If it turned out to be not worth fixing... you could probably get your money back by parting it out.
