Hey I've been grinding corn with my jd 700 grinder/mixer. However has a 1000 pto. I'm wanting to change it over to a 540 pto. That way I can use my smaller more fuel efficient tractor. What all would this require changing? I'm sure it will require changing the gearbox, but what about anything else? And how much of a job is this to conquer?

On the old John Deere 96 combines the pto speeds were changed by swapping the gears in the primary gear box. If this works for you it would make the job real easy.

If the above doesn't work basically all you need to do is change the gear box and the pto quick coupler. Make sure your speeds end up being close to the same and your good to go.

Now in all reality if you do the math on this whole project it will probably cost you more than you will ever save in fuel.

I know what you mean. Parts are not cheap nor easy to find for older machinery. The tractor I use to grind will run 540 or 1000 pto. The grinder is my only machine that takes a 1000 pto. My other tractors are all 540 pto only. So if I have a break down on the tractor that can run the 1000 pto I'm stuck not being able to grind my feed. Where a 540 driveline would match up to all of my tractors.

You would swap out the gears in the main input drive to a 29 and 31 tooth set up. When both parts where still available it was a spendy conversion, approx. $1,000. But now both gears are no longer available so you will be down to having them made or finding salvage.

Or buy an older grinder mixer. I have never used on that didn't have a 540 PTO but then I left that world 35 years ago.

You are not going to save enough fuel to ever pay for the parts and bother . Leave it alone and run it as is .

That would all depend. If my tractor goes down that can run the 1000 pto and I have to buy feed at $230 a ton feeding 4 ton a week wouldn't take too long to pay for the conversion to be able to run it with a different tractor.
